Amsterdam tech events this week: a premier ML conference lands in town (14–20 Aug 2026)

Deep August is supposed to be the breather — half the city on a bike somewhere south of the border, the other half pretending to answer email from a terrace. Then a premier international machine-learning conference books the Royal Tropical Institute for the week. So much for quiet. This is a genuinely strong week for Amsterdam tech events, anchored by one heavyweight and rounded out by a tidy set of networking evenings you can actually cycle between.

The Big One: UAI 2026 lands at the Tropical Institute

UAI 2026 — the 42nd Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence opens Monday 17 August at 11:00 and runs through the week at KIT Events, the Royal Tropical Institute. This is the real thing: one of the field's long-standing academic conferences, now in its 42nd edition, covering machine learning and reasoning under uncertainty — the probabilistic backbone underneath a lot of what the rest of the industry markets as "AI". Expect a tutorial programme feeding into a full main track of peer-reviewed research.

It is paid (€650) and it is a conference, not a networking night — so set expectations accordingly. If you build models for a living, do research, or lead an ML team, the value is in the talks and the corridor conversations between them. If you were hoping for a casual mixer, this is not it, and that is fine; the rest of the week has you covered.

Monday 17 Aug — UAI 2026 begins (see above), and continues across the week.

Tuesday 18 Aug — VC Networking & Tech Pitch, 20:00, Cafe CHA CHA, €15. A curated evening pairing AI and tech founders with investors, built around a one-hour pitch session. The €15 and the curation are the point — smaller, more intentional room than a free-for-all mixer.

Tuesday 18 Aug — WomenHack Amsterdam, 21:00, venue on registration, free. A diversity-recruiting evening: women engineers and data scientists meet 15–20 hiring employers in one room. Free, but registration-gated, and the venue is disclosed once you sign up. If you are hiring or job-hunting, this is the most concretely useful ticket of the week.

Wednesday 19 Aug — AI Builders Amsterdam, August Edition, 19:30, StartDock Coworking, free. Our builder pick. A technical monthly meetup on AI devtools, APIs, RAG and agents — the hands-on end of the spectrum, for people shipping rather than strategising.

Who should go where

Builders and ML folk — UAI is your week; if the ticket price is a stretch, AI Builders on Wednesday is free and squarely practical. Founders — the VC Pitch on Tuesday is your one focused evening; skip the generic drinks if you only have one night. Investors — Tuesday's curated pitch room is where the dealflow congregates this week. Hiring managers and job-seekers — WomenHack on Tuesday, no contest.

In a week dominated by a €650 conference, they are the ones keeping a free, technical, no-fluff monthly running for the people actually wiring up agents and RAG pipelines.
