Berlin tech this week: follow the unicorns, then follow the breakfast (17–23 Jul)

Berlin's calendar this week has a shape you can see from space: it is one Thursday with a few days attached. Four tech events in Berlin, three of them free, and two of them stacked on 23 July — a breakfast and a gathering, morning and evening, bookending a single day. That's not thin, that's efficient. Here's what's worth your time, who each room is for, and one honest note about how quiet the middle of the week really is.

The Big One: Thursday Gathering #63 at Venture Café

The Thursday Gathering is the closest thing Berlin has to a standing appointment: 150–250 founders, investors, operators, students and the merely curious, every week, through CIC Berlin. #63 runs on the theme "Follow the Unicorns: Diversity, Creativity & Growth" — which, in a city that has spent a decade arguing about whether its scene is genuinely open or just says so in English, is not a neutral topic. Berlin does this well when it does it honestly: the interesting version of that conversation is about who gets to build, who gets funded, and what creative range actually does for a company's growth curve rather than its careers page.

Who it's for: founders at any stage who want a room that isn't the same twelve people; investors who want to see a wider slice of the city than their inbox delivers; and anyone who has been meaning to go for a year and hasn't. It's free, it's weekly, and it is reliably the highest-density evening on Berlin's board. Go.

The week ahead, by theme

The Thursday double-header. Before the Gathering, the same day gives you betabreakfast at betahaus | Kreuzberg — Thursday 23 July, 12:00, free. It's betahaus's long-running weekly community breakfast, and it is exactly what it says: founders, freelancers, creatives and anyone passing through, eating and talking with no agenda and no programme. Pair it with #63 and you have a full day of Berlin's scene at both its speeds — the slow, Kreuzberg, nothing-to-sell version at midday, and the crowded, purposeful version at CIC in the evening. Same city, entirely different registers. Doing both is the single best use of a July Thursday we can offer you.

The founder-workshop track. INAM Founders' Hour: GTM, Sales & First Revenue — Tuesday 21 July, 18:00, free, and online. Worth being clear: this is not a room you walk into, it's a call you join, hosted by INAM (the Initiative for Advanced Materials). The Founders' Hours are a recurring open format where deep tech and advanced-materials founders bring real problems and talk them through with people who've solved them. This edition is on go-to-market, sales and first revenue — the exact wall that technical founders hit when the science works and nobody has paid for it yet. The online format is a feature here, not a compromise: deep tech founders are scattered, and an hour on a call is a lower bar than an evening in Mitte.

The Friday drink. Tech Social Berlin — Weekly After-Work Tech Networking — Friday 17 July, 20:00, Belushi's Berlin at Alexanderplatz, €3. Berlin's long-running weekly after-work social: no agenda, no talks, no name badges to speak of, just people who work in tech in a bar on a Friday. The €3 is the only money on this week's board and it buys the thing that matters most in a mixer — a door with a small amount of friction, which quietly filters for people who meant to come.

Organiser spotlight: Venture Café Berlin

Venture Café earns the spotlight this week by the simplest measure available: it showed up again. Thursday Gathering #62 ran on 16 July — last night, if you're reading this on publication day — under the theme "Connection Infrastructure: The Next Layer of Human-Centric Tech", with an 18:30–19:15 session titled "Connective Tissue: What Companies Lose When Functions Stop Talking." Seven days later, #63 lands with a different theme, a different set of tables, and the same 17:00-to-20:00 rhythm of demo tables, beats and networking.

That is the whole argument for the series. Berlin has no shortage of one-off events with a good poster; what it has less of is a room that is definitely open on a specific night, run to the same standard, whether it's February or the middle of the summer exodus. The numbering is the tell — sixty-three of these. The people who get value from Venture Café are the ones who treat it as a habit rather than an outing: you go often enough that the regulars know you, and then the introductions start happening without you asking. If you've been once and found it big and impersonal, that's what a first visit to #63 feels like. The fourth one feels different.

Four is a small number and we're not going to pretend otherwise. But look at the composition rather than the count: a weekly gathering with 150–250 people, a weekly breakfast with a decade of habit behind it, a weekly bar night, and a targeted founder workshop. There's no filler in there — nothing on this list is a made-up mixer padding out a slow month. Berlin in July shrinks to its load-bearing structures, and those are the four.

Worth knowing

• betabreakfast is listed at 12:00, despite "breakfast" and despite the description calling it a morning gathering. We're reporting the listing time; if you're planning your Thursday tightly, check the event page before you cycle over.
• INAM's Founders' Hour is genuinely online. The listing says "Online (hosted by INAM Berlin)" and that's literal — there's no Berlin address to turn up to. Don't be the person who goes looking for a building.
• Thursday 23 July is a double-header, not a clash. betabreakfast at noon and Thursday Gathering #63 at 19:00 are seven hours apart. If you're coming into the city for one, take both — it's the closest thing to a full day of Berlin's scene you'll get this month.
