Birmingham tech events this week: a quiet weekend, then Tuesday-to-Thursday earns its keep (19–25 June)

Let's try the week from a different angle. Instead of marching you through the calendar day by day, here's the more useful question for Birmingham tech events between 19 and 25 June: who are you, and where does that put you? The weekend is empty — nothing listed Friday to Sunday, so genuinely rest — and then the city wakes up Tuesday and runs hard through Thursday. Seven networking events, six of them free, and most of them sort cleanly by the job you do. So this week we've organised the whole thing around the audience lenses, and put the headliner where it belongs: in the middle of the people it's actually for.

If you're a builder or a PM

This is your week, and the centre of it is the flagship.

ProductTank Birmingham — Wednesday 24 June, 7:30pm, x+why Foundry, free — is the highest-signal event on the Birmingham board this week. Two senior product managers, from Holland & Barrett and OneAdvanced, are tackling the two talks every product team is quietly arguing about: why app-first transformations fail, and the AI adoption trap. This is a proper product room — not a generic mixer with a product label stuck on it — at Brindleyplace, and the ProductTank format reliably draws the people who own roadmaps rather than just react to them. If you ship software in this city and only go to one thing this week, this is it.

If your hands are more on hardware than roadmaps, fizzPOP Makerspace's public open night runs the same Wednesday — 8pm, fizzPOP Makerspace, free. 3D printers, the laser cutter, the electronics bench, and the most welcoming room in Birmingham tech. It starts as ProductTank winds down, so the truly committed can do both.

If you work in security

CRANE West Midlands Regional Seminar — Cyber Security: Emerging Threats — Tuesday 23 June, 11am, STEAMhouse, free — is the find of the week. CRANE is the EPSRC-funded Cybersecurity Research Academic Network for England, and they're bringing academic and industry security researchers together for a full day on emerging threats. It's niche by design and credible by default — the kind of room where the conversations are a year ahead of the headlines. This is the first time STEAMhouse's calendar has surfaced something this good for us, and it's free for a full day of genuine research. If security is your world, clear the Tuesday.

If you're a founder

Two distinct calls, both on Tuesday, both free.

NatWest Pitch Club: How to Talk About Your Business and Make People Care — Tuesday 23 June, 2pm, NatWest Accelerator Birmingham — is a fast, practical lunchtime session on communicating what you do with clarity and impact, whether you're talking to customers or investors. If your pitch makes people nod politely and forget, spend the ninety minutes.

Then in the evening, Birmingham Tech Network (BTN) Evening Drinks — Tuesday 23 June, 8pm, Slug & Lettuce, Brindley Place — is the reliable monthly: no pitches, no agenda, just the city's tech crowd at the bar. The low-pressure counterweight to a day of working on your pitch.

For something with a bit more soul to it, Entrepreneur Talks — Using Your Voice For Purpose — Wednesday 24 June, 6pm, EY Birmingham, free — is BK Networks' evening series at EY's Colmore Row offices, this edition on finding and using your voice with purpose. Informal, founder-and-professional crowd, and a corporate venue that keeps it grown-up.

If you're in AI, careers or research

iCAN Birmingham & PwC — AI & Your Career Panel — Thursday 25 June, 6:30pm, PwC Birmingham, free — closes the week at One Chamberlain Square. The Insurance Cultural Awareness Network and PwC are running an evening panel on AI and careers — a credible room at the intersection of fintech, insurtech and inclusive professional development, and the rare AI event this week aimed at where the technology meets your actual job.

Earlier that same midweek, Responsible AI for Sustainable and Inclusive Development — Wednesday 24 June, 10am, Curzon Building, Birmingham City University, free — is a full-day academic symposium on sustainability, bias and inclusive design in AI systems. If your interest in AI is the responsibility question rather than the build, this is the day for it — though note it clashes head-on with ProductTank's evening, so it's really an either/or with the builder track above only if you want the whole day.

Who to skip, and who to prioritise

Investors: quiet week locally — nothing pitch-shaped or demo-day-shaped on the Birmingham board. ProductTank is the room with the most operator density if you want to read the product scene; otherwise your dealflow is elsewhere this week. Sales & marketing: no dedicated martech event this week, so don't force it — Tuesday's BTN drinks is the broadest room, and the CRANE seminar is worth it only if you sell into security. The honest call: this is a builders-and-founders week more than a revenue week.

Organiser spotlight: the academic-industry bridge

A quiet pattern this week: three of the strongest events are run by institutions, not the usual meetup crowd — CRANE (an academic research network) at STEAMhouse, Birmingham City University's responsible-AI symposium, and PwC hosting iCAN. After a few months watching Birmingham's calendar, this is the city's real edge: the universities and the big professional-services firms actually open their doors here, and they do it for free. London makes you pay for a fraction of this. If you're new to Brum tech, following the institutional calendars — STEAMhouse, BCU, Aston, the Library of Birmingham — is the underrated way in.

First-timer's note

New to any of these? Three practical things. Register even when it's free — the academic and corporate-hosted events (CRANE, BCU, PwC) often need your name on a list for building access, and a venue like PwC at One Chamberlain Square won't wave you through the door otherwise. The daytime events are not casual — the CRANE seminar and the BCU symposium are full working days; treat them like a conference, not a drop-in. And BTN drinks is the soft landing — if the idea of a structured event makes you wince, Tuesday night at the Slug & Lettuce is just people, no programme. Start there.

Worth knowing

• ProductTank is the one to register early for. Our run notes had it at 40 RSVPs against a 90-person capacity at x+why Foundry — it's not sold out, but a flagship with named speakers on a hot topic fills the back half of the curve fast. Don't leave it to Wednesday afternoon.
• CRANE is a first for us. STEAMhouse's calendar had gone quiet for a while; this seminar is the event that brought it back onto our radar. If you go and it's good, that's a source worth telling us about — early feedback shapes what we surface next.
