Dublin tech events this week: an AI takeover, from coffee mornings to demo night (24–30 Jul)

Some weeks you have to hunt for a theme. This week it hunts you. Look down the Dublin calendar for the next seven days and it's AI, AI, AI — from a Saturday coffee morning to a screened demo night, with a detour into the physics of the interconnect at Trinity along the way. Whether you build models, sell to people who do, or just want to understand what everyone's so worked up about, there's a room for you. And the craic, reassuringly, is intact — half of these are as much about who's standing next to you as what's on the slides.

Theme of the week: AI, from the café to the cutting edge

The centrepiece is AI Tinkerers Dublin: Demo Night with Toast, on Wednesday 29 July at Baseline. It's free, it's featured, and it's the one to get on the list for early. This is a screened, demos-first builder night — no pitch decks, no fireside chats, just technical show-and-tell on generative AI and agentic workflows, capped at 150 and sponsored by Toast. The demo bill is named and it's a proper mix: Tashfeen Ahmed (Microsoft), Shiv Rajappa (Mastercard) and Paula Ribeiro (Toast) among the builders showing real work. Screened means exactly that — apply, don't just RSVP — but the bar it sets is why the room is worth being in.

AI workloads are breaking the interconnect: as models scale, the bottleneck slides off the chip and onto the wire, and co-packaged optics is the industry's answer. It's a CONNECT Centre event, so expect a research-grade crowd and a talk that respects your intelligence.

And if all of that sounds like a lot, start gently. Morning Grind: AI, Coffee & Connection (Sat 25 Jul, 11:00, Butlers Chocolate Café on Shelbourne Road, free, featured) is the lowest-friction way to plug into Dublin's AI community this summer — a relaxed coffee morning where nobody's presenting and everybody's approachable.

By the numbers

Eight events in the window, and every single one is free — a clean sweep, which is unusual even for a Dublin summer week. Saturday is the busy day with three events. Alongside Morning Grind there's Mastering Data Science Engineering (Sat 25 Jul, 11:00, Starbucks on Leeson Street, free) — a working session for people who build data systems rather than talk about them, with three back-to-back practitioner talks including Dionei Junior on taking raw data to production — and the Dublin Linux Community monthly pub meetup (Sat 25 Jul, 16:00, Moss Lane, free), an unpretentious afternoon of open-source chat from a group that's been running for years and welcomes newcomers.

The midweek stretch of Tuesday-to-Thursday is where the heavyweight talks land. By category, AI and deep tech dominate, but there's real range: health, infosec, open source and web dev all get their own night. If you wanted to sample the whole Dublin scene in one week without spending a euro on tickets, this is close to the ideal week to do it.

Health and biotech people: Unlocking Health Equity with Digital Health — Medtech Brew (Tue 28 Jul, 19:00, O'Neill's Merrion Row, free) is the first Medtech Brew of 2026, run by Irish Medtech and BioInnovate Ireland — an informal evening for medtech founders, investors and innovators.

Security folk: Dub|Sec July 2026 Social (Wed 29 Jul, doors 18:30, The Camden Court Hotel, free) is Dublin's long-running infosec community — two talks from around 19:00, then drinks and shop talk. It clashes with AI Tinkerers, so choose your Wednesday tribe.

Builders and web devs: Codú Web Developer Meetup (Thu 30 Jul, doors 18:00, Marsh Ireland on Baggot Street, free) closes the week. Codú is Ireland's biggest web developer community — 3,600+ members — and its meetups fill up, so register rather than assume.

Organiser spotlight: AI Tinkerers Dublin

Worth calling out the crew behind Wednesday's headline. AI Tinkerers Dublin has quietly become one of the most credible recurring nights in the city precisely because it refuses to be a networking event with AI branding stapled on. The screened entry, the capped room, the demos-first rule — every choice is designed to keep the signal high and the sales pitches out. When named engineers from Microsoft, Mastercard and Toast are willing to stand up and show unfinished work to the same room, that's the format doing its job. If you're a builder, this is the series to make a habit of.

Worth knowing

• First Fridays for Startups has changed shape. Dogpatch Labs' long-running First Fridays has shifted to a monthly online broadcast — it's no longer the in-person Friday gathering people remember. If someone points you to an in-person First Fridays this week, they're working from old information; check the format before you make the trip.
• Wednesday is a genuine clash. AI Tinkerers and Dub|Sec both run Wednesday evening. Two good rooms, one night — decide by whether you'd rather watch AI demos or talk threat models over a pint.
• Screened means apply early. AI Tinkerers' 150-cap plus approval process is not a formality; leaving it to Tuesday is how you end up on a waitlist.
