Edinburgh tech events this week: money week, with an emulator on the side (12–18 June)

Two hundred and fifty years after a local lad published the Wealth of Nations, Edinburgh spends a week debating what finance should become — and the tech events in Edinburgh this week orbit that question. The Finance Festival hits full stride, the Futures Institute keeps its regulars, and EdinburghJS schedules the most gloriously impractical talk of the month. Eight events, seven free. Here's the week, sorted by what you're after rather than what day it is.

The Big One: Ethical Finance Global 2026

Thu 18 June, 08:30 — Sheraton Grand Hotel and Spa — paid (Global Ethical Finance Initiative)

Ethical Finance Global is the flagship of the Edinburgh Finance Festival: a full day at the Sheraton on the future of finance, deliberately timed to the 250th anniversary of Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations. For Edinburgh's fintech founders this is the densest concentration of capital, regulators and institutional buyers the city will host before autumn — the corridor conversations are the product, the panels are the excuse. It's a paid ticket and the only one on this week's list, which tells you who it's priced for. If your company sells to financial institutions or raises from people who fund them, Thursday is the week's only mandatory date.

The week, by strand

The money strand (Edinburgh Finance Festival)

Wednesday is the warm-up. ICAS hosts The Future Skills of the Finance Profession at CA House, 08:15, free — a festival breakfast on how AI and sustainability are rewriting the accountant's job description. Same day at 15:00, Carbon Tracker and GEFI run a roundtable on systemic climate risk in LGPS at Queen Elizabeth House — niche, free, and exactly where climate-fintech founders should be listening. Then Thursday's flagship at the Sheraton.

The engineering strand

EdinburghJS asks "Writing an Emulator in JavaScript?" at Nova House — TravelPerk's office — Tue 16, 18:30, free. Pushing a language somewhere it has no business going is the best kind of meetup talk. And IOT North Scotland covers data drift in deployed ML models — Advait Sowale on keeping models honest in the real world — Wed 17, 19:00, free. One caveat on that one below.

The regulars

Founders Hub Friday co-working at the Bayes Centre, Fri 12, 09:30, free. Traveltech Meet Up at the Futures Institute (Room 2.55), Mon 15, 17:00, free — around 100 founders and product people from the UK's traveltech innovation hub. And Venture Café's Thursday Gathering goes agri-food for Sustainable Gastronomy Day — Thu 18, 17:00, free, EFI as always.

Who should go where

Investors — Thursday at the Sheraton, full stop. Everything you'd want from this city in one room, once.

Founders — if you sell into finance, pair Wednesday's ICAS breakfast with Thursday's flagship. Everyone else: Venture Café Thursday evening is the better room-per-hour deal, and Monday's Traveltech meetup is a genuine buyer-and-builder crowd if you're anywhere near travel.

Builders — EdinburghJS Tuesday is the fun one; IOT North Wednesday is the useful one if you run models in production. A two-night week, both free.

Sales & marketing — thin pickings. The ICAS breakfast puts you next to finance decision-makers at 08:15 for nothing; that's the play.

Organiser spotlight: Venture Café Edinburgh

Every Thursday, all year, the Futures Institute opens its doors and Venture Café fills them — oceans one week, human connection science the next, agri-food this week. No other organiser in Scotland runs a free weekly gathering with this consistency, and it shows in who turns up: founders, students, the odd angel pretending to be there casually. They're also extending the franchise — the Founders Meetup Edinburgh x Venture Café on 25 June is confirmed (our registration came through on the 7th), which is shaping up to be the founder event of the month. If you've never been, this Thursday's Future-Proofing the Plate is a friendly on-ramp.

Last week, briefly

UX Scotland filled Pollock Halls for two days and confirmed its status as the design fixture of the year — if you missed it, the talk decks usually surface within a fortnight. The quieter winner was Web going Green: GSF Scotland's first event drew an unusually warm comment thread from attendees afterwards, the kind of post-event chatter that says a community just found its footing. Watch that series — and this week's Carbon Tracker roundtable carries the same green-finance thread forward.

Worth knowing

  • IOT North's Wednesday venue is still TBC — it's listed as "see registration," so check your confirmation email before you set out. We'll update the listing the moment it lands.
  • Two dates for the diary from our inbox: GameDevEd's Social Meetup is confirmed for 23 June at OX184 Bar on the Cowgate, and ProductTank's next edition (25 June) is themed "How Do I AI? A Day in the Life of PMs." Both will appear in next week's roundup; both will fill.
  • The Finance Festival continues beyond this post — Thursday's flagship isn't the end, so fintech readers should keep an eye on the listings.

Everything above and whatever lands next is on the Edinburgh listings. Running something we haven't found? Submit it — we read everything.
