Edinburgh tech events this week: AI security, pizza demos and a growth clinic (24–30 Jul)

The city is doing that late-July thing where it quietly inhales before the Fringe blows the doors off in early August. The venues aren't full of comedians yet, which means the tech calendar still has room to breathe — and this week it uses that room well. One genuinely sharp AI talk, the biggest community meetup in town, and a founder clinic that trades theatre for actual advice. If you only pick one evening, the good news is you can hardly go wrong.

The Big One: AI security, minus the hand-waving

The event to build your week around is Security in AI-enabled Organisations: Why Culture, Controls and Common Sense Still Matter, on Wednesday 29 July at 47 Potterrow, University of Edinburgh. It's free, it's featured, and it's the rare AI event that isn't about prompts or productivity — it's about what breaks when a whole organisation starts wiring models into everything.

The draw is the line-up. Cybersecurity engineers from Skyscanner and Accenture unpack what a resilient security culture actually looks like when adoption is racing ahead of governance. Chrisando Ryan (Skyscanner) leads the practitioner view — the messy reality of controls, shadow tooling and the human factors that no policy PDF ever catches. If you're a security lead, an engineer touching AI features, or a founder who suddenly has data-handling questions you didn't have last year, this is your evening. Builders and engineers. Wednesday is yours, but Tuesday is the social anchor. Tech Meetup Edinburgh — July 2026 (Tue 28 Jul, 18:30, central New Town, free) is the biggest community tech meetup in the city: pizza, lightning demos, a keynote, and the widest mix of founders, developers and designers you'll find under one roof all week. Address comes on registration, so sign up rather than turning up.

Founders and growth people. Point yourself at Growth Clinic Edinburgh — July 2026 (Thu 30 Jul, 18:00, CodeBase, free, featured). It's a working session, not a lecture: you bring a real growth challenge, and marketers and operators help you pull it apart. The format rewards people who arrive with a specific problem — vague "how do I get users" questions get vague answers, so come prepared.

Investors. Quiet week for pure dealflow — no demo day or pitch competition in the window. If you want a read on early-stage energy, Tuesday's Tech Meetup is where the founders congregate; treat it as scouting rather than a pipeline event.

Hidden gem: the indie web, over coffee

The one most people will scroll past is Homebrew Website Club Edinburgh — 28 July 2026 (Tue 28 Jul, 19:00, Costa Coffee at Princes Mall, free). It's an unglamorous name for a genuinely lovely idea: bring a laptop, work on your own personal website or side project, and swap breakthroughs with people who still believe the web should be something you own rather than rent. No talks, no pitches, no badge scanning — just makers and their own domains.

We flag it because it's the antidote to a week heavy on AI and growth. If you've been meaning to rebuild your portfolio, start a blog, or just remember why you got into this, an hour with the IndieWeb crowd does more for that than another mixer. It clashes with the Tech Meetup on the same night, so pick by mood: big room and momentum, or small table and craft.

Worth knowing

• The Fringe ramp is real. From early August the city gets busier, hotter and pricier by the day; venues start guarding their diaries. This is close to the last "normal" tech week before the festival reshapes everyone's evenings, so use it.
• Venture Café is still on its summer break. Edinburgh's Thursday Gathering doesn't resume until 13 August — outside this week's window. If a Thursday night at the Bayes Centre is part of your usual routine, don't plan around it yet; Growth Clinic is the Thursday to back this week instead.

FAQ corner

Are these events really free? Three of the four this week are — the AI-security talk, the Tech Meetup and the Homebrew club all cost nothing, and the Growth Clinic is free too. "Free" on our listings means free to attend; you'll still usually need to register so organisers can plan numbers (and, for the Tech Meetup, so they can send you the address).

Can I just walk in, or do I need to register? Register where you can. The Tech Meetup only releases its New Town venue on sign-up, and university-room events like Wednesday's talk can hit capacity. Turning up unregistered is a gamble on the busy nights.

What time do people actually arrive? For the evening meetups, doors at 18:30 usually means real arrivals from around 18:45–19:00, with talks a little after. Coffee-shop sessions like Homebrew are come-when-you-can.
