Edinburgh tech events this week: a founder morning, a Web3 room and hedgehogs (31 Jul–6 Aug)

The get-in has begun. Barricades up, posters going out, the sound of a thousand flyers being printed somewhere off the Royal Mile — Edinburgh is bracing for the Fringe, and the city's about to double in size. The tech scene, characteristically, keeps its own quieter tempo through all that. This week's crop of tech events is short but well-chosen: one genuine headliner, a reliable Web3 room, a games social and a delightfully odd .NET night. Every one of them is free, which is a small mercy in a fortnight when a pint near the Meadows starts costing festival money.

The week, day by day

Tuesday 4 August gives you two rooms with very different energy. Blockchain Scotland Meetup — August 2026 (18:00, The Bayes Centre, University of Edinburgh, free) is Edinburgh's most consistent Web3 gathering — talks, demos and networking on tokenisation, on-chain finance and blockchain infrastructure, convened by the Blockchain Scotland crew who've kept this room going month after month. An hour later and a short walk away, GameDevEd Social Meetup — 4 August 2026 (19:00, OX184, free) is the friendly fortnightly drinks for anyone working in or around games — students, indie devs, triple-A veterans and artists all welcome. No talks, no agenda, just the games crowd and a bar.

Wednesday 5 August is where the week peaks, and it does so before most people have finished their coffee. Unfiltered Edinburgh — August 2026 (09:30, CodeBase, free) is the pick to build the week around. This is CodeBase and Techscaler's flagship founder morning: a 90-minute, no-slides session where founders talk to other founders who've hit the same walls. Honest, practical, peer-led — the anti-conference. No panel of experts telling you how it's done from stage; just a room of people running companies, comparing scars.

If you run something, or you're seriously thinking about starting, this is worth rearranging a morning for. The format only works because people are candid, so come ready to be useful as well as needy. Then, if you've an appetite for something completely different that evening, .NET Edinburgh's August event (19:30, Limitless offices on Alva Street, free) is your close of play — more on that below, because it's the week's hidden gem.

Organiser spotlight: the Scottish Technology Club

If you only follow one thing to stay on top of Edinburgh's tech calendar, make it the Scottish Technology Club. It's less a single organiser than the city's unofficial switchboard — a cleanly curated calendar that pulls together meetups, talks and socials from across the ecosystem, with venue and organiser details attached rather than the usual guesswork. Half the events in this very post surface there first. In a scene that's compact but scattered across university buildings, coworking spaces and back rooms of pubs, having one reliable place that maps it all is genuinely useful. If you're new to Edinburgh tech, or back after a summer away, start there and you'll rarely be caught out by a room you didn't know was happening.

Hidden gem: .NET, IoT and hedgehogs

The one to smile at this week is .NET Edinburgh — August Event (Wed 5 Aug, 19:30, Limitless offices on Alva Street, free, light refreshments). Mike Irving presents "‘.NET, IoT and Hedgehogs!" — an experimental journey using C# and .NET plus a bit of IoT, and, apparently, hedgehogs. It's exactly the kind of talk that gives a language user group its character: a working engineer chasing a genuinely odd idea in public, hardware on the table, no pretence that it'll all work first time.

We flag it because the fun evenings are where the real conversations happen. A hall full of .NET developers who came for a hedgehog gag are a warmer, chattier crowd than any polished keynote produces. If you write C# for a living — or you just want a low-stakes room after a long day of Fringe crowds — this is the one to end your Wednesday on.

Worth knowing

• The Fringe changes everything from here. From this weekend the city gets busier, hotter and dearer by the hour; venues start guarding their diaries and your usual quick hop across town becomes a shuffle through crowds. Plan your evenings, book where you can, and give yourself extra time to get anywhere near the centre.
• Venture Café is still on its summer break. Edinburgh's Thursday Gathering at the Bayes Centre doesn't resume until 13 August — outside this week's window. If a Thursday night there is part of your routine, hold on one more week; it's back the Thursday after next.
• A clean free week. All four events this week cost nothing to attend. You'll still want to register — CodeBase morning sessions and university-room events both plan on numbers — but nobody's asking for your card.
