The city is at full roar, every venue in the centre is a comedy show or a queue for one, and the tech scene sensibly steps back and lets August have its moment. So this is a genuine breather week for Edinburgh tech events: one weekend curio and one Thursday that quietly matters. Both are free, and neither will cost you a night you can't spare.
Last week, briefly
The week just gone was the busy one. Unfiltered Edinburgh drew founders to CodeBase for its no-slides morning, Blockchain Scotland held its reliable Web3 room at the Bayes Centre, the GameDevEd social filled OX184, and .NET Edinburgh closed things out with a talk about IoT and, improbably, hedgehogs. Four events, four full rooms, then silence — which is exactly why this week reads so thin by comparison. Nothing's wrong; the calendar simply front-loaded the fortnight.
The two on the board
Saturday 8 August brings the odd, lovely one: HTML Day Edinburgh 2026 (15:00, on or near the Meadows — final spot still to be confirmed, free). It's the local edition of the global HTML Day, run by James of the Edinburgh Homebrew Website Club: two hours of people making web pages by hand, the old-fashioned way, outdoors if the weather plays along. Bring a laptop, or a pen and paper, or nothing at all. There's no agenda beyond the small, defiant pleasure of building something simple that's entirely yours. In a week when the whole city is selling you polished spectacle, an afternoon of hand-written HTML on the grass is a fine antidote.
Thursday 13 August is the one to actually mark. Venture Café's Thursday Gathering (18:00, The Bayes Centre, free) returns from its summer break with an evening on social impact in Scotland — the people building better systems for charities and social enterprises. If you've been away from the scene since June, read this as the signal it is: Venture Café resuming means term-time is restarting. Its weekly Gathering is the closest thing Edinburgh has to a standing town square for tech and founders, and the first one back after a break is always warmer and better-attended than usual.
Who should go where
Founders and community builders: Thursday's Venture Café is your evening, full stop. It's the one room this week where you'll bump into people you actually needed to see, and the social-impact theme pulls in a crowd that thinks past the next funding round.
Builders: Saturday's HTML Day is aimed straight at you — hands on keyboards, no talks, no pitch. It's small and unserious in the best way.
Investors and sales: be honest with yourself — your week is quiet, and that's fine. There's no dealflow room and no buyer-heavy mixer on the Edinburgh board this week. Hold your energy for the 20th onward, when the calendar refills.
Looking just past this week
The thinness is temporary, and the refill is already visible. The following week brings the density back: TechTalks Edinburgh #9 — Nix & AI-Driven Development (20 Aug) is the standout, a proper builder session and one we'd flag for anyone doing serious dev tooling. The GameDevEd social returns on 18 August, and Founders Hub by Bayes and ScotlandIS lands on the 21st.
