London tech this week: AI talks, crypto crime and a $10k agent hackathon (14–20 Aug 2026)

Eight London tech events this week: Mindstone's AI meetup, a crypto asset-recovery panel, a $10k agent hackathon and Friday mixers.

Mid-August is supposed to be the quiet stretch, the fortnight when half of London's founders are somewhere with better weather. The calendar didn't get the memo. This week runs from a Friday after-work mixer straight through to an online fintech session the following Thursday, with an AI meetup, a crypto-crime panel and a cash-prize hackathon in between. The job here, as ever in London, is picking — you can't do all eight, so here's where the evenings are best spent.

The Big One: Mindstone's August AI Meetup

The headline this week is Mindstone London's August AI Meetup on Wednesday 19 August, 19:30, at Inspire St James in Clerkenwell — free. The speaker lineup has just been published: three short talks that deliberately span the range, from the technical end to the practical, "how do I actually use this on Monday" end. Mindstone's format is built for people who want to leave with something they can try, not just a deck to nod along to, and the sessions are hands-on rather than lecture-and-leave.

If you go to one AI event this week, this is it — broad enough for a curious PM or founder, meaty enough for the engineers. It fills up, so register rather than banking on the door.

The week ahead, day by day

Friday 14 Aug — Two ways to start the weekend. London Tech Mixer and Social is the weekly after-work mixer on Whitehall, at The Clarence, 18:30, £3 — the crowd is tech, AI, data and IT, and it's the low-commitment way back into the scene after a summer lull. Later the same evening, PaperJam Game Jam: Live Scream runs at Newspeak House, 19:30, free (more on that below — it's the hidden gem).

Saturday 15 AugFounders Running Club :: London meets at Regent's Bar & Kitchen, 10:30, free: a weekend run and coffee for founders and operators. The best conversations rarely happen over a lanyard; they happen at kilometre four.

Sunday 16 AugAgents vs Wall Street // $10k cash prize, from 10:00 in Central London, free but apply-to-attend (venue disclosed to accepted applicants). It's a one-day hackathon: build autonomous agents that forecast a real company's earnings, with a $10k prize on the line. The clearest builder pick of the week — bring a laptop and a thesis.

Monday 17 AugCryptoMondays London — Following the Money: Crypto Crime & Asset Recovery at Reed Smith in Central London, 19:30, free. London's longest-running Web3 meetup convenes a panel on how illicit crypto funds actually move and how they get recovered — a topic with real teeth, hosted at a law firm that knows the terrain.

CryptoMondays London — Following the Money: Crypto Crime and Asset Recovery

Tuesday 18 AugTech Networking Event by Startup Valley at The Roundabout, Old Street, 19:00, free: a structured pitch-and-networking night for people who'd rather have a format than mill about.

Wednesday 19 Aug — Mindstone (see above).

Thursday 20 AugBuilding Financial Products in the AI Era, 14:00, online via LinkedIn Live, free. A fintech-meets-AI product discussion you can catch from your desk — the one to bookmark if your week's already full by Wednesday.

Hidden gem: PaperJam Game Jam at Newspeak House

Easy to scroll past, worth stopping for. PaperJam Game Jam: Live Scream (Fri 14 Aug, 19:30, Newspeak House, free) is part game-design book club, part hands-on workshop: you play an indie game, dissect its systems, then build paper prototypes of your own. We flagged it because the skill underneath — taking apart why something works and rebuilding it fast — is exactly what product and design people spend careers trying to sharpen, and here it's a Friday night with cheap materials and low stakes. Newspeak House in Bethnal Green is one of the better rooms in London for this kind of thing.

FAQ

Are these events really free? Almost all of them. Seven of this week's eight are free to attend; the exception is the Friday London Tech Mixer, which asks a nominal £3 on the door. The online Thursday session and both AI and crypto meetups cost nothing.

Do I register in advance or can I just turn up? It varies. The Friday Tech Mixer is walk-in-friendly — turn up and pay the £3. Mindstone and CryptoMondays are free but do fill, so registering ahead is wise. Agents vs Wall Street is the one that's genuinely gated: it's apply-to-attend, and the venue is only disclosed to accepted applicants, so leave time for that before Sunday.

Coming up

Two on the horizon just past this window: Tech & Tonic | Summer Drinks (Novabook) is pencilled for Wed 26 Aug but is currently awaiting host approval — we'll confirm once it's locked. And Master The Vibe London on 14 Sep has updated its topic to moving AI agents from proof-of-concept to enterprise production — one for the calendar if that's your patch.
