London tech this week: a three-way Tuesday, and what it costs you (17–23 July)

Look at London's diary for the next seven days and the shape jumps out before any of the content does. Nothing on Sunday. Nothing on Wednesday at all. And then Tuesday the 21st, when three genuinely good rooms open their doors within an hour of each other. That's this city in miniature: the tech events in London aren't thin this week, they're badly distributed, and the only real work is deciding what you're prepared to miss. Here's the week, day by day, with the honest calls.

Friday 17 July

Reimagine Health with eMed & OpenAI opens the week at 18:00, free. eMed and OpenAI on what applied AI actually changes in clinical care and delivery — short, and worth it purely for the calibre of the two names in the room. One caveat you should know before you plan your evening: the listing gives the location as central London with the exact venue disclosed on registration. So register first, then work out your route. We'd rather tell you that than let you find out at 17:30.

Saturday 18 July

Builders, this one's yours. TxOdds x Solana — World Cup Hackathon runs from 12:00 at Encode Hub, free: a one-day build sprint pairing sports-betting data from TxOdds with Solana's on-chain tooling, timed to the World Cup. Encode Club is London's most prolific hackathon operation, and a Saturday sprint with a real dataset and a real deadline will teach you more than any panel on this page.

Monday 20 July

Emerging Technology Networking for Advisors, IT Professionals & CEOs at The Anthologist, 19:30, £12. Curated rather than open-door: technology advisors, consultants, IT leaders, CIOs and CTOs, founders and execs across AI, cyber, cloud and enterprise software. Twelve quid buys you a room where the job titles have budgets attached. If you sell into the enterprise, this is the most efficient Monday on the board.

Tuesday 21 July: three rooms, one evening

Here's the clash. Three events, 19:00 to 20:00, and no version of the evening where you get all three.

The Big One: Mindstone London July AI Meetup

Mindstone London July AI Meetup — 19:30, Inspire St James in Clerkenwell, free — is the week's centre of gravity and the hottest thing on our London board by some distance. It's the city's biggest practical AI meetup, and the format is the reason it works: three focused talks, including a technical "what I learned building this" slot, rather than a founder telling you AI is going to change everything. Free, recurring, and it fills. If you use AI in your actual job and you only have one evening this week, this is the default answer.

The other two

AI & Tech Networking Event in London by Ascent Valley starts half an hour earlier at The Cadogan Arms, 19:00, £20. Ascent Valley run founder-and-investor mixers across 13 countries and vet the room, which is what the £20 is actually paying for — no talks, just a curated crowd of founders, engineers and investors. And at 20:00, Newspeak House hosts the third option, which gets its own section below because it deserves it.

The call: Mindstone if you want to learn something, Ascent Valley if you're raising or hiring and want density, Newspeak House if you're tired of both formats.

Thursday 23 July

TypeScript AI Conference: London takes the whole day — 09:30, Convene 22 Bishopsgate, £99. It's the only conference built specifically for teams shipping AI in TypeScript, with a fourteen-plus speaker line-up, and it's the strongest single-day engineering programme in London this month. Ninety-nine pounds is a real number, but it's a fraction of what a comparable enterprise AI conference charges, and the day is aimed at people writing the code rather than the people approving the budget.

Who should go where

Builders. Your week is the best of any lane. Saturday's Solana hackathon if you want to make something; Mindstone on Tuesday if you want to hear how other people made something; TypeScript AI on Thursday if your team ships AI features and you can get the ticket signed off. Three different weeks, all good.

Founders. Tuesday is your decision point, and we'd steer you to Ascent Valley over Mindstone if you're actively raising — Mindstone's room is builders, not cheque-writers. If you're not raising, invert that.

Investors. Quiet week, and we'll say so. Ascent Valley on Tuesday is where the founders are, and that's about it. Keep the powder dry.

Sales & marketing. Monday at The Anthologist. That's the one — buyers with budgets, and £12 to get in the room. Skip the rest.

Organiser spotlight: Newspeak House

When we swept London for new listings this week, Newspeak House accounted for nearly half of everything worth adding. That's not a fluke — they've been quietly running one of the more thoughtful corners of the London scene for years, and their events consistently turn up things the mainstream calendar misses.

This week's is Thought Experiments in Pubs: Living with Tech / The Way We Participate — Tuesday 21 July, 20:00, Newspeak House, free. Small-group conversation about AI, technology and how they reshape the way we participate, structured around short imaginary scenarios with regular group reshuffles. No stage, no slides, no pitch. The reshuffles are the clever bit: you can't get stuck talking to one person for two hours, and you can't hide at the back. If the standard networking events in London have started to blur together for you, this is the genuine alternative.

First-timer's note

Three things that took us too long to learn. First: on a night like Tuesday, pick one and commit. Room-hopping between three venues means three sets of half-conversations and nothing to follow up on. Second: at the free meetups, nobody is checking your credentials at the door — the mild dread you feel walking in alone is universal and lasts about four minutes. Third: the follow-up is the event. A message the next morning referencing what you actually talked about beats a fortnight of turning up and saying nothing.

Worth knowing

• Venue-on-registration is having a moment, and it's worth planning around. Friday's eMed session gives its address only after you sign up. It's a common London pattern, and it usually works fine — but we've seen a July case where attendees were asking the organiser for the address on the day. Register early enough that you have somewhere to complain to.
• Wednesday is empty. Genuinely. We swept it and there's nothing to list. Take the evening, or use it on the follow-ups from Tuesday.
• Mindstone is a marketing contact of ours, not a partner. We list them because the meetup is good, not because there's a relationship behind it. Same bar as everything else on the page.
