Manchester tech this week: agtech, app security and a very full Thursday (17–23 July)

Eight tech events in Manchester this week, and every single one of them is free. That's the good news. The less good news is that four of them land on Thursday night, and the first four days of the window are empty — nothing Friday, nothing over the weekend, nothing Monday. It's a thinner week than this city usually turns out, and we'd rather say that than dress it up. But the events that are here are properly stocked, and Thursday is a real problem to solve rather than a lack of options.

The Big One: Venture Café goes agtech

Venture Café Manchester: Growing Northern Food Futures — Manchester's AgTech Pioneers — Thursday 23 July, 18:00, SISTER at the Renold Building, free — is the week's headline, and it's a more interesting choice than the usual Thursday Gathering. Instead of the general innovation-community mix, this one points the whole evening at one thing: the wave of agricultural biotech and agtech coming out of Greater Manchester.

That matters because agtech is one of those sectors everyone assumes belongs somewhere else — Cambridge, the Netherlands, anywhere with more fields than tram lines. It doesn't. There's a real cluster here, and this is the first time we've seen it get a night of its own. If you're near deep tech, biotech or the food system, go. If you're not, go anyway: the value of a Venture Café evening is the room, not the topic.

The week, day by day

Tuesday 21 July gives you two, both at 19:00 and both free. If I Were a Betting Man, Then a Statistical Society Would Agree About AI is a Manchester Statistical Society evening talk asking not what AI can do but what it should do, and for whom — the kind of question the hype cycle skips. Worth flagging: the listing gives the venue as "via organiser", so you'll need to register to find out where you're going. Alongside it, the Northern Azure User Group July Meetup meets at the Bonded Warehouse — practitioner talks for the Azure and cloud crowd across Manchester, Leeds and the North West.

Wednesday 22 July is the security-and-testing night. Testing, AI, Thinking from MancTech (18:00, free, venue again via the organiser) sits at the junction of software testing, AI and critical thinking — practical talks for testers, QA engineers and developers working out what to automate and what not to.

An hour later, OWASP Manchester: From 0-Day to Secure Day (19:00, free) runs an evening on application security from disclosure through to defence. AJ Bell CISO Dan Harris opens with security and innovation inside a regulated financial business, with Rory Sheldon and Alasdair Gorniak also on the bill. A named CISO talking about real constraints in a regulated firm is worth more than a dozen vendor decks, and it's free. One practical note below on where AJ Bell actually is.

Thursday 23 July is the pile-up. Venture Café's agtech evening opens at 18:00, then three more land within 90 minutes of each other. PyData Manchester: Code Night (19:00, Social Refuge at Queer Lit, free) is the low-pressure one — bring whatever you're building, a bit of Python, a half-finished ML experiment, and work on it near other people doing the same. Network One: AI & Machine Learning Networking (19:00, The Anthologist St Peter's Square, free) is the relaxed mixer version for anyone building, researching or investing in AI here. And Practically AI: Lightning Talks (19:30, Matillion at New Bailey, free) brings four short talks from engineers who've actually shipped: Esly Lescano on taking Refurb AI from idea to product, a WhatsApp fact-checking bot, a look at how you evaluate an AI code reviewer, and a session on who's really doing the thinking.

Who should go where

Builders. Wednesday's OWASP is the pick of the week if you write code that touches the internet. If AI is your day job, Thursday's Practically AI is the strongest technical hour on the board — four talks, all from people who built the thing rather than bought it. PyData's Code Night is the answer if you'd rather make progress than listen.

Founders. Thursday, Venture Café. It's the only room this week with the full spread of the ecosystem in it, and the agtech framing means the conversations will be specific rather than the usual "so what do you do".

Investors. Genuinely quiet for you. Venture Café on Thursday is where founders congregate, and beyond that there's no dealflow room this week. Take the breather.

Sales & marketing. Network One's Thursday mixer at The Anthologist is your one — relaxed, free, and the AI crowd shows up. The rest of the week is engineers talking to engineers.

Venue corner: SISTER, the Renold Building

Venture Café's home is SISTER in the Renold Building, and if you're going to make one venue in this city a habit, make it this one. It's the old UMIST estate reborn as Manchester's innovation district, ten minutes' walk from Piccadilly and served by the tram stop there if you'd rather not. The building is unfussy in the way this city likes — no marble lobby, no clipboard at the door — and the Thursday format is deliberately open, so walking in alone is normal rather than awkward. Being that close to Piccadilly also means you're never short of somewhere to carry the conversation on afterwards.

Worth knowing

• AJ Bell is in Salford, not central Manchester. Wednesday's OWASP night is at AJ Bell's offices at Exchange Quay — Greater Manchester, absolutely, and comfortably reachable, but it's a different trip from the New Bailey and Piccadilly venues the rest of the week uses. Check the tram before you plan a 19:00 arrival.
• Two of this week's listings won't tell you the venue until you register. The Statistical Society talk and MancTech's Testing, AI, Thinking both show as "venue via organiser". Not a red flag, just a reason to sign up early rather than on the day.
• Pencil in 6 August now. Just outside this window, Venture Café Manchester is running "Sculpting Innate Immunity" with ARIA — a panel including ARIA's Brian Wang, Dr Parsa Pirhady, Jacob Thompson of ADDER-VAX and Andrew Ruffler. FAQ corner

Are all these Manchester tech events really free?

This week, yes — all eight of them, with no catch. That's unusual even for Manchester. Free still means registering, though: most of these are ticketed for headcount, and two won't share the venue until you do.

Four events on Thursday — can I do more than one?

Realistically, one and a half. Venture Café starts at 18:00 and the other three follow between 19:00 and 19:30, so the workable move is an early hour at SISTER then on to one of the others. Trying for three means arriving late to all of them.
