If you were anywhere near the city's tech scene on Thursday 23 July you'll know why the calendar ahead looks lean by comparison — and why that's fine. Wednesday and Thursday were stacked. OWASP Manchester: From 0-Day to Secure Day at AJ Bell (Wed 22) was the hot ticket — AJ Bell CISO Dan Harris opening on security in a regulated firm, and the appsec room turned out in force. Then Thursday 23 July did the heavy lifting: Venture Cafe Manchester spotlighted Greater Manchester's AgTech pioneers at SISTER, while Practically AI: Lightning Talks at Matillion, PyData Manchester's Code Night and Network One's AI & ML edition all ran the same evening. Four events, one night. What that means for this week: the community has just had its fill of AI talks, so the smaller, hands-on sessions ahead are where the useful conversations move next.
The Big One: Dot Net North asks what AI does to the pull request
The headline this week is AI Is Here: PRs Are Dead, Long Live PRs — Dot Net North July on Tuesday 28 July at Betfred's Steam Packet House (free). It's the right kind of Manchester talk: no hype, a real question every engineering team is now living with. When AI writes, reviews and even merges code, what actually happens to the pull request — the ritual that's held teams together for a decade? Dot Net North has been one of the city's most consistent engineering meetups for years, and this is the sort of practitioner-level topic they do well.
