Paris tech this week: the city has gone on holiday — two events didn't get the memo

Somewhere around the second week of July, Paris tech events stop. Not slow down — stop. When we swept the city's sources at the start of the month, we found no Paris conference at all between 8 July and 28 August. Seven weeks of nothing: the grandes vacances, rendered as a calendar. The offices empty, the panels wait for the rentrée, and the Périphérique fills with people heading south.

Which is exactly what makes this week's two survivors worth a look. Anything that runs in the middle of a citywide shutdown runs because someone genuinely wants it to happen. As filters go, that one is hard to beat. Paris is still new on anopenroom — we're weeks in, not years, so treat this as curation rather than a census. Two events. Both earn their evening.

The Big One: Startup Networking Workshop #23 at Station F

Read the number first. Startup Networking Workshop #23 — listed in French as Atelier Networking Startup #23 — is FlexUp's twenty-third edition. Twenty-three times someone has booked the room, sent the invitations and got the right people through the door. In a scene where meetups routinely die at edition four, a series in the twenties is its own credential. You are not taking a punt on a first night.

The format is the point. FlexUp runs these as small, curated sessions rather than open-door mixers: early-stage to growing startups, project leaders, and ecosystem partners in a room sized so you can actually finish a sentence. That selectivity cuts both ways — it means fewer bodies, and it means the bodies are relevant. Register rather than assume you can wander in.

And then there's the address. Station F is the world's largest startup campus and the institutional anchor of Paris tech — the place the city points at when it wants to explain itself. A free Tuesday evening inside it, in the middle of the deadest fortnight of the French year, is a genuinely good trade. Half the campus is on a beach. The people who show up on 21 July are the ones building through August.

Who should go where

• Founders — this is your week, and it's not close. Station F on Tuesday is the only room in Paris this month where the ratio of serious people to small talk is in your favour. Come with a sentence, not a deck.
• Builders — thinner pickings. The Workshop skews commercial rather than technical, so if you want engineers, Friday's mixer is the better room: data scientists, cybersecurity folk and product people, no agenda.
• Investors — quiet, honestly. There's no demo day, no pitch clock, no dealflow funnel in Paris this week. If you're in town, the Workshop is a read on who's still working in July — which is its own signal — but don't fly in for it.
• Sales & marketing — skip the week. Your buyers are out of office until September; spend the time on the pipeline you'll open at the rentrée.

Hidden gem: the €3 Friday that keeps the lights on

We're calling Paris Tech Mixer & Social a gem for an unglamorous reason: it's on. While the summits sleep until late August, Paris Tech Social keeps putting a recurring afterwork in the diary — software engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity people, PMs, founders and students, three euros, no programme. In a seven-week drought, the thing that simply doesn't stop is worth more than the thing that dazzles once a year. It's the low-stakes way to find out who else stayed in town.

Worth knowing

• The 21:00 start is not a typo. Our listing has the mixer beginning at nine in the evening — later than the UK equivalents, and worth knowing before you plan dinner around it. Turn up at 20:00 and you'll be drinking alone.
• The Station F workshop runs in English. Both language listings point to the same English-language session, so bring your international co-founder without worrying.
• Sign-ups are open for Paris. If you saw a notice on our Paris pages a couple of weeks back saying otherwise, that was our bug and it's been fixed since 2 July. You can register through the listings as normal.

The Paris Open Source AI Summit (POSAIS) 2026 ran last Friday at Studio 104, Maison de la Radio — LINAGORA and OpenLLM France, free, a full day for the people who ship open-source AI. It was the last loud date on the calendar, and it knew it. The shutters came down behind it.
