Amsterdam tech events this week: the RAI borrows the city, and the best rooms are the ones it left behind

For four days this week, the centre of gravity of Amsterdam tech is a convention centre in Zuid that most of the city's engineers will never walk into. IBC takes the RAI from Friday, four more events on our board are effectively satellites of it, and every tram heading south will tell you so. But the trade show is the backdrop here, not the story: 28 tech events across seven days, 22 of them free, and the rooms worth cycling to are almost all somewhere else.

The Big One: IBC 2026

IBC 2026 - from Friday 11 September, 09:00-17:00, RAI Amsterdam. EUR 250.

IBC is the largest gathering in Europe for media, entertainment and broadcast technology, and it fills the whole of the RAI for four days. It is the only featured event on our Amsterdam board this week and the only one that changes the shape of the city while it runs. The 2026 programme leans hard on streaming architecture, which is why it reaches past the broadcast crowd: the questions that show floor argues about - delivery cost, latency, the energy budget of video - land on anyone shipping a product with video in it.

Who it is not for: EUR 250 buys a conference aimed at people whose job title contains the word media. If you build SaaS or train models, the four free satellite sessions below touch the same industry for nothing.

The week ahead, by where your bike ends up

Zuid and the RAI. Four listed events sit inside or beside IBC, all free: Greening of Streaming Hour, Friday 15:00, on the energy footprint of video delivery and the only serious sustainability content in the building; Rise Awards Networking Drinks & Shortlisting, Saturday 15:00; Women in Streaming Media, Sunday 09:00; and #GALSNGEAR Meetup at IBC, Sunday 16:00. All at the RAI - read the note below before planning around the word free.

Also south: Building an Agentic Culture at AI House on the Zuidas, Friday 09:30-12:30, free - and sold out. We flagged it as approval-gated a fortnight ago and said to apply early. It closed.

Centrum. The week's best evenings are here. Creating with AI: Blasphemy or the Next Creative Revolution? at Pakhuis de Zwijger, Tuesday 15 September, 20:00, free, from Amsterdam AI: generative tooling put in front of the people whose work it displaces and the people building it, in the format Pakhuis does better than anyone - a disagreement on stage rather than a panel nodding along.

Wednesday 16 September offers two: AI Builders Amsterdam at StartDock on the Keizersgracht, 17:30, free, demo-first with retrieval infrastructure a recurring theme; and React Amsterdam: AI-Powered Web Engineering at The Social Hub, 18:30, free - the city's largest front-end community on what actually changes in a React codebase when agents write part of it. An hour apart and both central, so this is the one clash you solve by leaving early. Friday closes with International Tech Drinks at Capital C, 16:00, free, from StartupAmsterdam.

Oost and the Science Park. Adyen hosts twice, both free: ClickHouse Amsterdam Meetup on Tuesday at 17:15, and the deliberately vendor-neutral AMS DB September Meetup on Thursday at 18:00. If you want to know what Dutch engineering teams actually run rather than what they say at conferences, those two rooms are the honest read. Thursday, paid. TECHSPO Amsterdam 2026 fills the Johan Cruijff ArenA, 09:00-17:00, EUR 27. The Linux Foundation runs two agent conferences the same day at the same price: MCP Dev Summit Europe and AGNTCon + MCPCon Europe 2026, both 09:00-17:00, both EUR 450. Read the note below first.

Weekend odds. Coffee Coding at The Coffee Room, Saturday 09:30, free. Circuit-bending Workshop w/ Fra Zedde at Q-Factory, Sunday 15:00, EUR 35 - hardware hacking on the creative end.

Who should go where

Data and platform engineers. Tuesday at Adyen for ClickHouse, Thursday at Adyen for AMS DB. Two free evenings, one host, real war stories.

Front-end and product engineers. Wednesday, React Amsterdam. Most AI-and-code talks this year were a demo reel or a warning; a room that has to maintain the codebase afterwards asks better questions.

Designers and creative technologists. Tuesday at Pakhuis de Zwijger - free, and an actual argument. LTUX Monthly at Van Lanschot Kempen, Thursday 18:00, free, is the practical follow-up.

Founders. Thursday morning at Startup Village for the grants session: unglamorous, free, worth more than most pitch evenings. Skip the paid drinks formats - the free calendar is too good to buy introductions.

Investors. Thin again, no demo day or pitch night on the curated board. Thursday's grants session is where the earliest-stage deeptech founders will be.

Last week, briefly

A heavy week just gone. AISO Opening Night with Peter Wennink ran to a waiting list on Tuesday 8 September - Wennink on a panel with Annebel de Hoogh of the UvA and Jan Pecka of AISO, moderated by Room for Discussion. Wednesday carried two more: Soup Talks with Bob van Luijt of Weaviate, and Mindstone Amsterdam. Both ran.

The pattern carries forward: three free rooms, two at or over capacity, all three circling where human judgement still beats the machine. Tuesday at Pakhuis de Zwijger is that argument with the volume up - and in a much bigger venue, so this one you can still get into.

Worth knowing

• A correction: the Decagon fireside on 24 September is hosted by Whale, not RIVVIA. We had RIVVIA as the organiser. RIVVIA is the venue - Keizersgracht 264 - and Whale runs the evening with Ashwin Sreenivas of Decagon. It ends at 19:00, it is approval-gated, and our own request is still pending, which is why it has no page yet.
• Two Linux Foundation conferences, one Thursday, same price, no venue on our board. MCP Dev Summit Europe and AGNTCon + MCPCon Europe 2026 both read 17 September, 09:00-17:00, EUR 450, same organiser. Check which pass you are buying, and where, before spending EUR 450 twice.
• Free at the RAI is not the same as free of the RAI. The four IBC satellites are listed free but sit inside a paid trade show. Confirm with the organiser whether you need a show pass.
