Birmingham tech events this week: the Wednesday pile-up moves house

Birmingham tech events 21-27 Aug: Friday's £3 mixer at The Wellington, a free Wednesday double bill at The Cocktail Club, and a venue hop to watch for.

Four rooms, one venue, one night. Last Wednesday 19 August, Albert's Schloss hosted four separate free networking events in Birmingham, all kicking off at 8pm. The pile-up got the attention — but the detail worth keeping is who caused it. Two organisers ran two rooms each: Network One put on both its AI & Machine Learning evening and its Entrepreneurs & Business Builders meetup, while The Birmingham Network ran its professionals and SMEs session alongside its startup founders, tech entrepreneurs and investors evening.

That's not four groups colliding by accident. That's two operators deliberately splitting a single Wednesday into four crowds — in a city plenty of people still describe as too small to sustain that. So here's the read on Birmingham tech events this week: they're doing it again. Fewer doors, different postcode.

The week ahead, day by day

Friday 21 August — the mixer, back at The Wellington

The Birmingham Tech Mixer & Social runs from 7pm at The Wellington, £3. It's the weekly fixture that opens the working week's wind-down: software engineers, data and security people, product folk, students and career-switchers, no agenda beyond conversation and a drink.

Three pounds is the entire barrier to entry, which is the point of it. Read the venue note at the bottom of this post before you make a habit of it, though — the pub changes next week.

Saturday to Tuesday — nothing listed

Straight answer: our Birmingham calendar is empty from Saturday through Tuesday. Late August is the deepest part of the city's summer dip, and rather than dress up a fifth mixer as a discovery, we'll say it plainly — this week is a Friday and a Wednesday.

Wednesday 26 August — a free double bill at The Cocktail Club

Wednesday is the week. Two free rooms, both at The Cocktail Club from 8pm, and the split between them is genuinely useful.

The pick is Network One: AI & Machine Learning Networking, Birmingham Edition — free, and the most focused room on the calendar this week. It gathers AI founders, machine-learning engineers, data scientists and people circling the field from the outside. Birmingham does far more applied AI and data work than it gets credit for, and a lot of it sits inside agencies, consultancies, universities and product teams where the practitioners never surface at a general mixer. A room framed around AI and ML does the filtering for you: whoever you end up next to probably speaks your language.

Next door, The Birmingham Network runs its Tech Startups, Professionals & Investors Connect Event — also free, also 8pm, and the room that leans commercial: founders, industry professionals, finance people, the occasional investor. If your Wednesday question is "who might back this or buy this" rather than "how did you build that", this is your door.

Thursday 27 August — clear

Nothing listed. Use it to follow up on Wednesday.

By the numbers

A quick shape of the week, and of the one behind it:

  • 3 events on the Birmingham calendar across the seven days.
  • 2 of the 3 are free. The third is £3.
  • 2 of the 3 land on Wednesday, both at the same venue, both at 8pm.
  • 2 organisers — Network One and The Birmingham Network — account for two-thirds of the week. Last week they accounted for four of the five listed events between them.
  • 5 events last week, 3 this week. The dip is real, and it's seasonal, not structural.
  • 0 talk nights, workshops or pitch showcases. Every room this week is a drop-in social format. If you want a stage, September is where you'll find one.

The organiser concentration is the number to sit with. A scene where two operators can reliably fill four rooms on a random August Wednesday is a scene with more depth than its reputation suggests — and it also means the calendar has room for whoever wants to run the fifth thing.

Across the network: Bristol, Friday

If your Friday is flexible and you fancy a train, the best-value ticket anywhere on our network this week is in Bristol. BSides Bristol 2026 runs on Friday 21 August from 9:30am at UWE's Frenchay Campus, X Block, and it's £15 — a community-run information security conference with talks, workshops and villages, for the price of two pints at a mixer. Bristol Temple Meads is a direct run from New Street. Security people in the West Midlands: this is the one worth the day out, and you'd still be home in time for someone's Friday night.

Worth knowing

Two practical things, both about where to physically stand:

  • The Friday mixer changes pub next week. It's at The Wellington on 21 August, as usual. But on 28 August it moves to Bacchus Bar, and then it's back at The Wellington on 4 September. One week away, then home again — exactly the kind of hop that sends a regular to the wrong door. Diarise the venue, not just the time.
  • Wednesday isn't at Albert's Schloss any more. Last week's four rooms were there; this week's two are at The Cocktail Club. If you went on the 19th and assumed the 26th was the same address, it isn't.

That's the week: one Friday, one Wednesday, everything free except three quid. Browse the full listings on the Birmingham page — and if you run something here that never seems to make anyone's list, a user group, a workshop, a monthly that's been going quietly for years, tell us. This city's rooms deserve a bigger audience than they get, and the calendar has space.
