Birmingham tech events this week: the quiet week after Tech Week

Birmingham Tech Week signs off Friday at the ICC.

Birmingham Tech Week signs off on Friday night at the ICC, black tie and awards and all. Then the city empties. The weekend has nothing, Monday has nothing, and the clocks go back on Sunday. Seven tech events in Birmingham in the week ahead, five of them squeezed into Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. That's what the week after a five-day, 35-event festival looks like — and the rooms still standing never needed the festival to fill them.

Last week, briefly

Tech Week took over the ICC, The Eastside Rooms, The Exchange and most of the Colmore business district. TechWM emailed attendees on Tuesday evening because the "add to calendar" export was handing out the wrong times. The corrected starts were 09:15 for the AI Symposium (registration 08:30) and 09:45 for Frontiers Day (registration 09:00). Both our rows said 09:00, and the start-time field has no write path, so we couldn't correct them.

The two you pay for

Engineering & Developer Conference — Friday 23, The ICC, £25. Tech Week's technical day, built for software engineers, developers, architects and technical teams rather than executives, with practitioner talks instead of keynote theatre. Our listing shows 08:00 because that's when registration opens; the programme starts at 09:00. Twenty-five pounds for a full day at the ICC is the cheapest serious conference ticket this city sells.

Black Tie Dinner & Tech Awards — Friday 23, The ICC, drinks from 19:00. Six West Midlands Tech Awards categories, dinner, then dancing. It's a paid ticket and our listing carries no amount, so check with the organiser rather than taking a figure from us.

Free tech events in Birmingham this week

Fund Your Business Your Way: Financials for Funding — Tuesday 27, 09:30 to 13:00, free. Fifth of six in the Birmingham NatWest Accelerator's Funding Accelerator, on the financial information funders actually ask to see. Our listing stores the street address instead of the venue name: it's the Accelerator at 2 St Philip's Place.

BA Breakdown Birmingham: AI After Dark — Tuesday 27, 18:00 to 21:00, 81 Colmore Row, free. Halloween framing, business-analysis substance: what AI is doing to the BA role. The organiser says the costume part is light.

BUILT BY HER: Showcase your Side Quests — Tuesday 27, 18:00, Griffiths Waite at Centre City, free. Women In Tech Birmingham puts people up for short demos of things they built outside work: weekend apps, hardware experiments, games, data projects. Nobody is selling anything. Birmingham runs this format better than cities three times the size.

Digital in Brum Social — Thursday 29, 18:00 to 21:00, The Lost & Found on Bennetts Hill, free. Digital in Brum restarting its informal socials. No talks, no agenda, no pitches.

The week's real main event is on Wednesday

BrumAI October 2026 — Wednesday 28, 17:30, Moss House at University College Birmingham, free. Hosted by UCB and sponsored by Griffiths Waite — the same firm hosting BUILT BY HER the night before, which tells you who keeps the lights on here. Peet Denny, who started BrumAI in 2017, is one of two speakers. The group is 2,915 people.

And it's full. BrumAI is on a waitlist at 80. Our page shows a working register button because the site can't store waitlist status yet, so take this as the correction: join the waitlist, don't assume you have a seat. Birmingham waitlists move — people drop out on the day more than you'd expect.

Who should go where

Investors — your week is over. Tech Week was your October in Birmingham, and nothing in the next seven days is built for dealflow. Tuesday's funding workshop is for the founders in the room, not the people writing cheques. Take the week back.

Founders — Tuesday morning if you're raising in the next six months, Tuesday evening if you're not. Financials for Funding is the least glamorous, most useful thing on the list.

Builders — Friday at the ICC, then Wednesday at UCB. Both are technical rooms where the talks assume you write code. They carry the week.

Sales and marketing — Thursday at The Lost & Found. It's the only room this week where the digital agency crowd will be standing around with a drink and no agenda.

Worth knowing

  • Two duplicates hit our Birmingham page during Tech Week. CyberQ's identity roundtable at Alpha Tower on Thursday and Medilink's Innovation Day at STEAMhouse both showed up twice, with forked organiser names and different registration links. One event each. That was us, and both are being cleaned up.

Why isn't that Birmingham event on your Birmingham page?

Because it isn't in Birmingham. The Smart Energy Systems SME session on 21 October gets filed as Birmingham on half the internet; it's in Wolverhampton, so it stays off the city page. Our rule is the city page means the city, not the region.

Does a waitlist place actually get me in?

Often, yes. BrumAI's waitlist sat at 80 this week. Join it, watch your email on the afternoon of the event, and turn up if you get the nod. Read the description before you trust a register button — sell-outs and waitlists live in the text, not the booking state.

Across the network

Bristol's Thursday is the opposite of ours: four events in a day, including a health-tech company demoing live at Future Space and an AI ethics night that sold out with nine on the waitlist. Browse Bristol if you fancy the train.

Just past the window: Building Energy Management Systems vs Artificial Intelligence, 4 November, 16:30, AtkinsRéalis at 2 Chamberlain Square — CIBSE West Midlands, free.

That's the week. Everything we have for Birmingham is here. If we've missed your event, send it over — this calendar is community-built, which is why the city punches above its listings count.
