Birmingham tech events this week: a daytime week, and a conference worth the day off

Four of the six tech events on our Birmingham city page this week start before 12:00. This week wants a day off, or a long lunch — not an evening. Three of the six are free, three are flagged featured, and the anchor is a conference that has no business being this cheap. Our coverage here is still filling out, so here are all six properly rather than a list stretched to look like ten.
The Big One: IGNITE26 takes Millennium Point
IGNITE26 runs Monday 28 September from 09:00 at Millennium Point, Curzon Street B4 7AP, £107.96, from the 51% Club.
Billed as the biggest female-founder conference outside London, it takes the whole building for a day of main-stage sessions, practical workshops and investor conversations. Two things make it the pick of the week. The format: workshops alongside a stage means you leave with something done, not just noted. And the scarcity: Birmingham has gone a fortnight without a room for founders raising money. A hundred and eight pounds is real money on a calendar that is mostly free — but if you are raising or hiring, it pays for itself in one conversation.
The other five, on a price ladder
Free, and the most substantial thing on the board. Scarecrow's MBSE Sharkfest opens Tuesday 29 September, 09:00, at the Birmingham & Midland Institute, 9 Margaret Street B3 3BS, over two days. Model-based systems engineering: tooling, methodology, and how MBSE is landing in automotive, rail and defence programmes.
Free, and the one proper engineering evening. Service Mesh Night — Cloud Native Computing Birmingham is Wednesday 30 September, 17:30, at Bluetel Solutions, 4 Temple Row. Traffic management, observability, and the question every platform team argues about: whether the complexity pays off.
Free, and a morning rather than a night. Let's Talk AI: Networking & Workshop runs Thursday 1 October from 10:00, hosted by Network Ltd — a workshop plus open networking for local businesses. Check the address: our record puts it at Ansty Park, Coventry CV7 9PU, a drive not a tram ride.
A fiver. An Evening with Jamie Bartlett is Tuesday 29 September, 19:00, at Waterstones, 24-26 High Street B4 7SL, £5.
Bartlett wrote The Dark Net and made The Missing Cryptoqueen; he is here on his new book, How to Talk to AI. Five pounds for a decade of reporting the internet's worst corners is the best value on the board, and a bookshop is a friendlier room than a co-working space if you know nobody here yet.
Twenty pounds, and it opens the week. LinkedIn Local Birmingham: September 2026 is Friday 25 September, 11:30, at Cosy Club, 33 Bennetts Hill B2 5SN, £20, hosted by Gus Bhandal: a practical lunchtime segment on presence and pipeline, then the room. If your pipeline lives on LinkedIn, go; if not, keep the twenty.
Hidden gem: two free days of systems engineering
Sharkfest is the one we would flag to a friend. The West Midlands has more systems engineers per square mile than almost anywhere in the country and almost no public calendar to show for it, so two free days of practitioner sessions in a Victorian institute on Margaret Street is a mismatch in your favour. Nobody is posting about it. If your work involves requirements and a safety case, clear Tuesday.
Are these events really free?
Mostly — three of the six charge nothing at the door. Check the tier, not the headline: elsewhere on our network this month a "free" event turned out to have a £5 tier, its free places restricted to angels and approved partners.
Who should go where
Founders. Monday, Millennium Point, the whole day. The only room this week with investors in it by design.
Builders. Your week is the free one: the Midland Institute Tuesday and Wednesday daytime, Bluetel Wednesday evening. Neither is a sales pitch.
Sales and marketing. Friday lunchtime at Cosy Club, the only room built for you — skip it if your buyers are not on LinkedIn.
Investors. One room, Monday, the paid one — but a full day of Midlands female founders beats any mixer this city has run all month.
Worth knowing
- One Birmingham event is in Coventry. Thursday's Let's Talk AI carries an Ansty Park address, CV7 9PU — twenty miles from the Bullring.
- Sharkfest is two days, listed once. Our record opens it Tuesday 09:00 and closes it Wednesday afternoon; check the organiser's page for which day is which.
- Service Mesh Night's address stops at 4 Temple Row. No postcode, no floor. Central, but check the meetup page for the door.
- Boards keep filling after we file. We listed five rooms for last week; eight now sit on that window.
