Birmingham tech events this week: two names, one Wednesday, and a pub you'll walk past

Two speakers, a host office in Brindley Place, and not a penny on the door. The #PBIBRUM September meetup on Wednesday 2 September is the first proper talk night to land on our Birmingham calendar in weeks — an actual stage, actual content, after a solid month in which every tech event in the city was a room with drinks in it. Networking events in Birmingham have carried the summer admirably. This is the week the format changes back.

The Big One: #PBIBRUM comes back with two speakers

The Birmingham Power BI Meetup Group meets at Eleven Brindley Place, in the Robert Walters offices, and it's free. The bill: Vlad Mihanta on Power BI Embedded — pushing analytics out of the report portal and into the products people actually use — and Neil Rowlands on the second slot.

Here's why a Power BI user group deserves the top slot in a city that spent August talking about AI. Birmingham's tech employment leans hard toward the places data gets used rather than invented: professional services, manufacturing and logistics, NHS trusts, councils, the consultancies with Midlands delivery centres. Those people aren't shipping foundation models. They're shipping the dashboard a director makes a nine-figure decision from — and Power BI Embedded, analytics dropped inside someone else's application, is where that work stops being reporting and starts being product. It's an underrated skill jump, and you learn it faster from someone who's done it than from documentation.

The other reason to go: practitioner user groups have a different corridor than mixers do. Nobody at #PBIBRUM is working the room — people turn up because they hit the same problem last Tuesday. If you've ever wanted to ask a real question and get an honest answer, that's the room.

One practical thing, and it matters: doors are at 17:45, introductions run from 18:00, and the evening finishes around 20:00. Turn up at quarter to six rather than on the hour — those first fifteen minutes are where the actual conversations happen, and they're the part people miss.

The other room: Friday's mixer, at a different pub

The Birmingham Tech Mixer & Social runs Friday 28 August from 6pm, £3 — and this week it is at Bacchus Bar, not The Wellington.

We flagged the hop last week and we're flagging it again, because a weekly fixture that moves for exactly one week is the most reliable way to send a regular through the wrong door. Same crowd though: developers, data and security people, product folk, students and career-switchers, no agenda beyond a drink and a conversation. Three pounds remains the entire barrier to entry.

Last week, briefly

Birmingham ran five listed events in the seven days to Thursday, and the shape of them says something. After last Friday's mixer at The Wellington, fizzPOP's open night opened the makerspace to anyone curious on the Wednesday; the same evening, The Cocktail Club hosted a free double bill — Network One's AI & Machine Learning edition alongside The Birmingham Network's startups, professionals and investors room. Then on Thursday the West Midlands HashiCorp User Group came back in person at Bluetel Solutions on Temple Row for an evening on platform engineering.

That HashiCorp night is the tell. Technical user groups returning in person — HashiCorp last Thursday, Power BI this Wednesday — is what the end of the Birmingham summer looks like. The mixers never stopped. The meetups are the ones coming back.

Who should go where

Builders and data people — Wednesday, obviously, and it's not close. Analytics engineers, BI developers, anyone maintaining a Power BI estate: this is the only technical stage in the city this week, it's free, and you get two speakers for it.

Founders — thin week, so be honest about it. No pitch night, no investor room, no founder breakfast. Friday's mixer at £3 is your cheap touchpoint; if you sell data or analytics into Midlands businesses, Wednesday is quietly the better evening, because the buyers are in that room as practitioners.

Investors — nothing built for you this week. Skip it.

Sales and marketing — Friday, and only Friday. A practitioner user group is not a prospecting venue, and Birmingham's scene is small enough that people remember.

What time do people actually arrive?

For the Wednesday meetup: right at the door time. Doors are 17:45 and intros start at 18:00, so anyone rolling in at six has missed the informal quarter-hour. For the Friday mixer, it's a drop-in — most people land between 6:15 and 7, and nobody is counting.

Are these events really free?

Wednesday genuinely is — free ticket, host office, no catch. Friday is £3 on the door, which is the whole cost of the week. If a ticket page shows you something different, trust the page and tell us.

• Bacchus Bar this Friday, The Wellington on 4 September. One week away, then home. Diarise the venue, not just the time.
• The Wednesday runs 17:45 to 20:00. Doors 17:45, intros from 18:00, out by eight. It's an early finish, so it works even if you've got somewhere to be after.
• fizzPOP runs every Wednesday, per the makerspace's own listing, though we've only got the 26 August night on our calendar. If you fancy a workshop rather than a bar, check their page first — we'd rather tell you it exists than pretend our list is the whole city.
• Birmingham Tech Week is 19–23 October. A way off, but it's the anchor the autumn builds around, and the good sessions fill before people think to look.
