Bristol tech events this week: Tuesday makes you choose, Thursday makes it up to you

Last week we told you to put CodeHub Bristol's Hack Night in the diary for 22 September. It is on our board now - and so are three other rooms opening within three-quarters of an hour of it. Nine tech events in Bristol between Friday and Thursday, six free, and more than half the week stacked onto one evening.

The week runs in three acts: a quiet weekend, a Tuesday that forces a choice, then two days that hand you the best of it.

Act one: a quiet weekend and one open door

The weekend is empty on our board and Friday carries one thing: the Google AI Skills Pop-up at Screwfix Bristol - St George on Hammersmith Road, free, with Google trainers on practical AI at work. It is a drop-in aimed at small businesses rather than engineers, so temper expectations - but a free hour on prompts and tooling is a fair trade for a Friday.

One caveat, and it is ours rather than Google's: the listing reached us without a start time, so treat it as TBC and check before you travel.

Act two: Tuesday, and you only get one of them

Five of this week's nine events fall on Tuesday 22 September. It opens at lunchtime, then three doors open inside forty-five minutes.

12:00 - AI Adoption: From Optional to Essential at Womble Bond Dickinson in central Bristol, paid, from AI West with Bristol Law Society and Bristol & Bath Legal Tech. Professor James Faulconbridge presents TiPS research from more than 60 professional services firms on how AI adoption actually plays out once it meets a partnership structure. If you sell into law or accountancy, it is the one room this week where your buyers sit together discussing why they have not bought yet.

Then the crush.

17:30 - TekCurious @Ghyston, free, at Ghyston, Floor 5 West, All Saints Street. Talks and networking inside a software consultancy's own office, and the easiest of the four to walk into knowing nobody.

18:00 - Bristol AI Ethics - September 2026 at Torchbox, 15 Colston Street, free. Miranda Mowbray of the University of Bristol on what you do when your boss asks you to do something unethical. It ends on concrete actions rather than a shrug, which is rarer here than it should be.

18:15 - Hack Night at DeskLodge House, 2 Redcliffe Way, free, from CodeHub Bristol. Side projects, coding challenges, or just company while you work. Arrive by 18:30.

Act three: Wednesday and Thursday make up for it

Wednesday 23 September, 17:30 - techSPARK Next Gen: What I Wish I'd Known, central Bristol, paid. Six lightning talks of career hindsight for people nought to seven years in, with pizza and drinks and an explicit no-sales-pitch, no-recruiter-pressure rule. That rule is the reason to trust it.

Wednesday 23 September, 18:00 - ProductTank Bristol #57 at Kaluza, Assembly Building C on Cheese Lane, free. Two talks, the first on AI second brains for lean product work, drinks between and the pub after. Our Birmingham board runs its own ProductTank the same night.

The Big One: AI SW Live takes a whole afternoon

AI SW Live! - Future Space Bristol runs from 15:00 on Thursday 24 September at Future Space, North Gate, Filton Road, Stoke Gifford. It is paid, from Tech South West.

It gets the headline because of what it is not: a conference where you sit in rows for six hours. The afternoon runs show-and-tell presentations, co-creation workshops, insight sessions and panels, then closes with an AI Bumper Quiz, food and beer - built so the South West's AI people meet each other rather than watch the same three keynotes.

It also fixes a geography problem. Bristol's AI scene splits between the city centre meetups and the Filton and Stoke Gifford cluster out at Future Space, and the two halves rarely stand in the same room. The 15:00 start is deliberate: it catches both. If you pay for one thing in Bristol this month, this is the one.

Who should go where

Builders. Tuesday, chosen by what you want your hands doing: Hack Night at DeskLodge to make something with other people, TekCurious if you would rather meet them. Then Thursday at Future Space if you can get the day.

Founders and business owners. The Coach House on Tuesday evening, and check the time first. If you only have one evening this week and you are early-stage, that is it - the rest of the week is built for practitioners.

Product and design people. Wednesday, Kaluza, free, no competition.

Sales and marketing. Tuesday lunchtime at Womble Bond Dickinson, for the research rather than the room. Skip the general mixers; the calendar is too good to spend on one.

Investors. Honestly, a quiet week. No demo night, no pitch showcase. The closest thing to dealflow in one place is Thursday afternoon at Future Space.

Questions we keep getting

Why does a listing show a midnight start time?

Because the start time did not survive the import and we have not confirmed it yet. Read it as missing rather than as midnight: two events this week are affected, the Google pop-up on Friday and the BSWN founders evening on Tuesday. Check the organiser's own page before you travel.

Is a free meetup still worth booking in advance?

Yes. Hosts order food and chairs from the registration count, and several of this week's rooms are inside private offices - Ghyston, Torchbox and Kaluza are all somebody's workplace, and reception needs your name.

Worth knowing

• Correction: Mindstone Bristol's October meetup has moved to 28 October, from 21 October. Our own listing still carries the old date and is being fixed - if you diarised it from us, move it.
• Engine Shed looks like it is operating again. We have had it recorded as closed since July, yet it hosted Bristol D365PPUG on 17 September and is down as the venue again in November. Unconfirmed with the building, so treat it as an observation rather than news.
