Bristol's week is two days long. Tuesday 29 September carries two rooms, Thursday 1 October carries four, and the other five days carry nothing. That is six tech events in Bristol on our city page between Friday and Thursday, four of them free: a small, deliberately curated week.
We will not inflate it. Six rooms written properly beats fifteen padded lines, and this six opens with the first meeting of something that did not exist here a month ago.
The Big One: Bristol gets a defence and dual-use network
Business Breakfast — Bristol SME Defence Network: Inaugural Networking Event meets Tuesday 29 September at Future Space, Filton Road, Stoke Gifford BS34 8RB, free, hosted by UWE Bristol. It is a breakfast, so plan for the morning: the listing reached us without a start time, and we would rather say so than invent one.
Inaugural meetings are usually a weak reason to go anywhere. This one is not. Bristol and the Filton corridor already do defence and dual-use work at scale, but the SMEs in that supply chain have had no forum of their own — the primes have their rooms, the universities have theirs. A first meeting is where the shape of a thing gets decided: bring an opinion, not a business card. Future Space is out of the centre, so treat it as a trip.
Tuesday evening: batteries, and the people who design around them

Battery storage usually enters the low-carbon conversation as a component. Here it is a design problem: where it goes, what it does to a building's services, what resilience looks like once the spreadsheet meets a floor plan. Bristol's climate-tech people talk to each other plenty and to building services engineers almost never.
Thursday: four rooms, morning to evening
The South West Expo — Bristol, 10:00, Leigh Court Business Centre, Abbots Leigh BS8 3RJ, free. A general business expo rather than a tech event — go with a commercial reason or skip it. The only room this week where the regional non-tech buyers turn up in numbers.
Brunch & Learn: Why you're not ranking in AI search according to academics, Temple Studios, Temple Gate BS1 6QA, £15, from Yours Sincerely. Another morning event with no confirmed start time on our page. Worth it if you own a website that used to get found: why brands vanish from AI-generated answers, argued from research rather than a marketing blog.
Nature and AI: Beauty meets the Beast, Wills Memorial Building, Queens Road BS8 1RJ, free, University of Bristol, with Professor Tilo Burghardt, Professor of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. Same caveat on the clock: the day is fixed, the hour is not on our row.
Burghardt turns computer vision on wildlife monitoring. The interesting half is what the models actually see, and which questions they cannot answer.
Hidden gem: the games talk that closes the week
Expert Talk: Building Audiences Beyond the Game is at Totos By The River, 125 Redcliff Street BS1 6HU, Thursday 1 October, 19:00, free, from Bristol Games Hub Antisocial.
Most transferable hour on the page, and nobody outside games will read it that way. Building an audience before the product exists, and holding it through a long release cycle, is exactly a hardware startup's problem — solved here by people who do it cheaply and often.
Who should go where
Founders. Tuesday morning at Future Space, if defence or dual-use is near your story. If not, no founder room on this page was built for you this week.
Climate and energy people. Tuesday, 18:00, Cheese Lane — the only room where the engineers who specify the kit are the audience, not the subject.
Builders and researchers. Thursday at the Wills Memorial Building — free, and the deepest content here.
Marketing. The brunch session, with your analytics open. Skip the expo unless you have a buyer to find.
Investors. Nothing here was built for you. Tuesday's breakfast is the one room where a new set of companies introduce themselves.
Worth knowing
- Three of the six listings reached us without a start time. The defence breakfast, the brunch session and the Nature and AI talk import with a midnight timestamp — no time was captured, and none of them starts at midnight. Confirm the hour with the organiser before you travel.
- Future Space is having a fortnight. AI SW Live took the building last Thursday; the defence network lands there five days later. Bristol's deep-tech centre of gravity sits in Stoke Gifford as much as the centre, and the bus ride is the part people forget.
- Free does not always mean walk-in. Check the ticket tiers: we corrected a Scottish listing this week whose free tier was restricted to approved investors, with everyone else paying £5.
