Bristol tech events this week: four rooms where you have to show your work

Last Friday, Bristol spent the whole day at UWE taking software apart. BSides was the best-value ticket on our network and the city turned out for it. This week the tech events in Bristol run the other way round: four rooms across seven days, and in three of them the price of entry is showing somebody what you've actually made. A sales pitch, a plugin, a half-finished game. Nothing to hide behind.

The Big One: Hack Your Sales, Part Two

Hack Your Sales: 2-Part Challenge (Part Two) runs Friday 28 August from 2pm at DeskLodge House, from the team at for the FOUNDERS. It is free — and that's a correction to what we published last week, when we flagged this one as paid. Our listing has it free, so plan on free and check the ticket page when you book.

The format is the reason it earns the headline. This isn't a panel about founder-led sales; it's a hands-on, competitive challenge where early-stage teams work the problem rather than watch someone describe it. Bristol has no shortage of technically excellent founders who'd rather ship for another six months than have the conversation where someone says no to them. A workshop that makes you do the uncomfortable part, in a room doing the same, beats a term's worth of content about pipelines.

Two honest caveats. It's Part Two, so some of the room will have context you don't — turn up anyway and say so. And a 2pm Friday start costs you the whole working afternoon, which is either a signal that they're serious or a scheduling problem. If it's the latter, the mixer four hours later is the consolation prize.

The week ahead: show, don't tell

Friday 28 August, 6pm — the Bristol Tech Mixer & Social at Hort's Townhouse, £3. The one room this week with no homework. It also sits neatly after Hack Your Sales: workshop in the afternoon, decompress with the wider crowd in the evening, same city centre.

Tuesday 1 September, 6:30pm — From idea to Approval: My Journey with WordPress.org Theme & Plugin Development at Temple Studios, free, from the Bristol WordPress Meetup Group. A first-hand account of building and publishing on WordPress.org — how it started, what broke, what the review process is actually like. Talks about getting through someone else's approval gate are rare and disproportionately useful, whether your gatekeeper is WordPress, an app store or a procurement team.

Thursday 3 September, 7pm — Playtest Party, Pub Edition at Totos by The River in Redcliffe, free. Local game developers bring prototypes and put them in front of real players.

Read that last line twice, because it holds an invitation most people skim past: you do not need to be a developer. The point is players — someone who has never seen the game, picking it up cold, in a pub, slightly confused. That's the data the developers came for, and it costs nothing to give it.

Last week, briefly

Four events landed in the seven days to Thursday: BSides Bristol 2026 at UWE Frenchay on the Friday, the Tech Mixer that evening, CodeHub's Hack Night at DeskLodge on Tuesday, and the Cowork Cafe at Replay on Wednesday. Same volume as this week, different centre of gravity — last week's anchor was a conference, this week there isn't one. Which is fine: the recurring rooms are back on their normal cadence, and that's the thing the summer had taken away.

Organiser spotlight: Bristol Indie Developers

Two of the last eight days on our Bristol calendar belong to the same group, and it's not the one you'd expect. Bristol Indie Developers ran Wednesday's Cowork Cafe at Replay and runs Thursday's Playtest Party at Totos — a co-working session and a feedback night, both free, both in pubs, a week apart. That's a complete loop for a solo dev or a small studio: somewhere to do the work, somewhere to test it. Bristol's games and creative-tech corner rarely gets counted as part of "the tech scene" round here, which is odd for a city with this much creative-industry heritage. Two rooms a week, no ticket price, run by the people who use them.

Who should go where

Founders — Friday afternoon, no argument. Hack Your Sales is the only room this week built specifically for you, and the uncomfortable format is the value.

Builders — Tuesday's WordPress talk if you ship anything through a review process, Thursday's Playtest Party if you make games or want to see how other people's work falls apart in front of strangers. Both free.

Anyone new to the scene — Thursday. A pub, a prototype in your hands, and an instant conversation topic beats standing at a mixer trying to open with "so what do you do".

Investors — quiet again. No demo night, no pitch showcase, nothing built for dealflow. September is where you should be looking.
