Edinburgh tech events this week: two. Here is what that actually means (11-17 Sep 2026)
Edinburgh tech events 11-17 Sep: two listings, and one is worth your Tuesday.
Two. That is the whole board — two tech events in Edinburgh between Friday 11 and Thursday 17 September, and one of them is a certification course. It is the thinnest week we have ever published for this city, and no version of a networking-events roundup turns two into ten without lying to you. So: which single room is worth your Tuesday, what we found that is not on our pages, and why the fortnight after this one looks completely different.
State of the scene: this is a gap, not a decline
September in Edinburgh has an unusually lumpy shape. The first week of the month carried a co-working Friday, a Tuesday morning at the Royal Bank accelerator and the Edinburgh Tech Network's drinks. The fortnight from the 18th carries at least five. This week falls in the trough, and the reason is institutional: the university calendar has not restarted, ScotlandIS and Technology Scotland are pointing their energy at the 24th, and the Ada Scotland Festival programme opens on the 18th. A two-event week reads like a scene going quiet, and it is not one. A compact city runs its calendar in bursts; look at seven days at a time and you will occasionally look at the wrong seven.
The one room: research security, at the EICC
Keeping Research & Innovation Secure — Briefing & Workshop runs Tuesday 15 September from 10:30 at the Edinburgh International Conference Centre, 150 Morrison Street EH3 8EE, and it is free. It is run by Technology Scotland, and we teased it last week as one for the diary. This week it is the diary.
The subject is protecting research and IP, aimed at universities and deep-tech companies, and the format is a briefing followed by a workshop rather than a panel and a glass of wine. That distinction matters. Research security has moved in about three years from a compliance footnote to a live condition attached to grant money, international collaboration agreements and, increasingly, due diligence on spinouts. Most founders coming out of a Scottish university lab have absorbed none of it, and find out when a funder asks a question they cannot answer.
Edinburgh is unusually exposed to that, in a good way: a large share of the deep-tech pipeline here starts inside a university department, and the informatics and AI research base is genuinely internationally connected. If you are a spinout founder, a technology transfer officer, or an engineer whose employer partners with a lab, a free morning at the EICC is cheap insurance. Go with the specific collaboration you are worried about in mind — workshops reward a real question.
The other listing is a CompTIA Data+ course on Thursday 17 September at 18:00, 21 Calder Road EH11 3PF, listed free. It is commercial certification training from a local provider, not a community event, and we are flagging it as such rather than dressing it up as a meetup. Judge it on the qualification; nobody from your scene will be in the room.

Founders Meetup Edinburgh — September 2026 runs Tuesday 15 September, 18:00–20:30, at Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP, 9 Haymarket Square EH3 8FY, hosted by UK Startup Events. It is not in our database, so we cannot send you to a page of ours — but we can send you to the organiser's page, and we would rather do that than pretend the week has one fewer evening in it.
The reason to go is the fireside: Mark Robinson, who founded deltaDNA and sold it to Unity, interviewed by Cat Burton of Goth Boss Studios. A games-analytics exit to a strategic buyer is one of the few Scottish outcomes founders here can learn the mechanics from, and an interview with someone who knows the sector gets closer to the truth than a stage-and-slides retrospective. Same day as the EICC morning, so Tuesday quietly becomes the whole week.
Also not ours yet: ScotSoft 2026 and the Young Software Engineer of the Year Awards, ScotlandIS's flagship annual day, at the EICC on Thursday 24 September — conference by day, awards dinner in the evening. The biggest fixture in the Scottish tech year, and missing from our listings. Both are now on our sourcing list, and both are a reminder that a thin week on our board is sometimes a thin week for us rather than for the city.
