Tech events in Edinburgh this week: who's paying for the room (2–8 October 2026)
Eleven Edinburgh tech events, 2–8 October: the FCA holds its Annual Public Meeting here for the first time, and Thursday carries seven of them.
Tech events in Edinburgh this week: who's paying for the room (2–8 October 2026)
Last week Edinburgh's calendar behaved like a city twice its size. Leading Organisational AI Transformations with the IIBA on Monday, Women in Data Science Edinburgh 2026 filling Heriot-Watt on Thursday, five separate things on Thursday alone. It also contained a Saturday sitting of Ragged University's IT and Biscuits series that had been called off the afternoon before — and our listing carried it straight through the event before we caught up. That page now returns a 404, which is the correct answer: it didn't happen. We chase organiser announcements daily and we still lost thirty-eight hours on that one.
This week is smaller and considerably better arranged. Eleven tech events over seven days, ten of them free, and the most unusual booking of the Edinburgh autumn belongs to a regulator.
The Big One: the FCA, at the Assembly Rooms
The Financial Conduct Authority holds its Annual Public Meeting 2026 in Edinburgh on Tuesday 6 October, 10:00, at the Assembly Rooms — free. It is the first time the meeting has been held here, and the Chair, Chief Executive and Executive Directors take questions.

Most weeks the thing we tell you to clear a morning for is a founder event. This is a supervisor putting itself in a room in the city it regulates from a distance, and letting people ask. If you build in payments, lending, wealth, insurance or anything sitting behind an FCA permission, an hour of direct questions to the people who write your rulebook beats three panels about it. Prepare one question. Scotland's financial services scene is large and its regulator normally sits in London.
The rest of the public purse
Two more events this week are funded by bodies whose job is to grow Scottish companies rather than to sell to them.
Fund, sell and scale globally — Thursday 8 October, 09:00, CodeBase, free. Scottish Enterprise on the practical mechanics of getting a Scottish company into overseas markets: funding, first customers abroad, the order you do them in.
What It Takes to Get AI Into Clinical Use — Thursday 8 October, 17:30, Bayes Centre, free. The Data Lab on the long road from a paper to a ward: regulation, evidence, and why a model that works is not a model that is allowed. The best technical evening of the week, and the most honest about timescales.
The membership bodies
The professional institutes are having a strong week, and all of it is on Wednesday night and Thursday.
So, your company is doing an AI transformation — lessons from the coal face — Wednesday 7 October, 18:15, at Skyscanner's office, free. BCS Edinburgh, with people who have actually run one. The title is doing the work here.
AI. Who is in control? — Thursday 8 October, 16:00, 107 George St, free. Denholm Associates on governance, accountability, and the gap between an AI policy and what your staff are already doing.
Cyber Scotland Connect: Edinburgh Meetup at CodeBase — Thursday 8 October, 17:30, CodeBase, free, sponsored by Cyera, with a social at BrewDog Lothian Road afterwards. One of the more reliably useful cyber evenings in the city.
The Royal Scots Club runs two on the same day, at opposite ends of the register: the Cyber Executive Education Seminar at 13:00, free, aimed at directors rather than security engineers — what an attack costs, and where accountability sits — and Minds & Machines: AI & Cyber Security Seminar at 19:00, £9, the only paid ticket in Edinburgh this week.
The community end
Unfiltered Edinburgh — Wednesday 7 October, 08:30, CodeBase, free. Candid, off-the-record founder conversation about what is actually going wrong, from the team behind Techscaler. The 08:30 start is deliberate; so is the absence of a stage.

Not Sure a Career in Tech Is for You? Think Again — Friday 2 October, 13:00, Dovecot Studios, free. Ada Scotland Festival on routes into the industry that don't need a computing degree. Send someone who thinks the door is shut.
Founders Coffee Club — Thursday 8 October, 10:00, Jamaica Yard, free. Recurring, low-friction, no pitching. The lowest-cost way to start.
Venue corner: CodeBase is carrying Thursday
Three of this week's eleven sit at CodeBase — Unfiltered on Wednesday morning, then Scottish Enterprise and Cyber Scotland Connect on Thursday. If you are new to the city, one building gets you a founder session, an export clinic and a cyber community inside two days.
One practical warning: CodeBase's own events calendar is currently serving a "coming soon" placeholder, so don't try to register there. Use the registration link on each event's page here instead.
Who should go where
Investors — a quiet week, honestly. One booking justifies itself: the FCA meeting on Tuesday, if your portfolio touches regulated finance. Otherwise Thursday's Fund, sell and scale globally is where Scottish companies with export ambitions will be standing.
Founders — Wednesday's Unfiltered is the highest-value early start on the calendar, because it is the one room where the answer to "how's it going" isn't "great". Add Thursday's Founders Coffee Club if you want low-stakes company rather than content.
Builders — the Bayes Centre on Thursday evening, without much competition. If you'd rather hear how AI lands inside a large organisation than how it's built, the BCS session at Skyscanner on Wednesday is the same question from the other end.
Sales and marketing — nothing this week is aimed at you, and we'd rather say so than dress up a cyber seminar as a buyer room. Sit this one out.
Worth knowing
- Next Friday's breakfast is approval-gated on every tier. AI Breakfast Club: Edinburgh runs 9 October, 08:30–11:00, at the Edinburgh Futures Institute, 1 Lauriston Place EH3 9EF, hosted by Twin Path Ventures. All five ticket types — Investor, Startup, Researcher, Student, Ecosystem — need host approval, and the room is only shown to you once you're approved. The Startup ticket is free. Register this week, not next Thursday.
- Wednesday's BCS session is inside a company office. Skyscanner reception will want a name that matches the one you booked under, so bring ID — three organisers across our cities have turned people away on exactly this in a fortnight.
- "Doors" and "start" are different things, and our listings usually hold only one of them. Where an organiser publishes both, arrive on the doors time.
- We won't tell you a ticket is available unless the organiser has said so. Availability labels are less reliable than we'd like, so on a free evening event, book anyway and turn up early.
Before you go
Eleven events, seven of them on Thursday 8 October. Edinburgh does not need thirty — but it does need you to choose two on Thursday rather than four.
Browse the full Edinburgh listings, and if you run something we've missed, send it over: we'd rather correct a listing than leave a room half empty.
