Edinburgh tech events this week: nothing until Tuesday, then September lands all at once (28 Aug–3 Sep)

Here is the odd shape of Edinburgh's week: four tech events, and not one of them happens in August. Our board is empty from Friday right through Monday while the last of the festival crowd has the city to itself and the posters come down off the Bristo Square hoardings. Then September opens on Tuesday and does not ease in — two conference-scale fintech days back to back, with two free meetups tucked around them.

Last week, briefly

Busy, and specialist with it. Tuesday ran a double — Careers in Space Tech at CodeBase against the tech behind modern gaming at the Bayes Centre. Wednesday brought the 38th AWS Edinburgh User Group back from its summer break at Skyscanner's Quartermile offices. Thursday stacked Venture Café's ARIA deep-tech edition against Product Circles at FreeAgent. Six rooms, all free. This week costs money and takes daylight instead.

The Big One: a full day on decentralised finance

Edinburgh Decentralised Finance Summit 2026 (Tuesday 1 September, 08:30, Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, £75) is Blockchain Scotland's second flagship DeFi summit, and it takes the whole day from an early start: decentralised protocols, tokenisation, risk management, regulation and autonomous systems.

Edinburgh has earned the right to hold this conversation seriously: asset management, actuarial work and pensions money sit within walking distance of a very good computer science department, and the regulation-and-risk half of the DeFi agenda is not an afterthought here — it is the local expertise. Seventy-five pounds is real money for a meetup crowd, but this is not a meetup. It is a full working day in a New Town institution, with the kind of attendee list a free evening does not produce.

Two conferences and two meetups

That is genuinely the whole shape of the week — a paid daytime tier and a free evening tier, and they barely overlap.

The conferences. Tuesday's summit is followed straight away by the Edinburgh Financial Technology Conference (Wednesday 2 September, 09:00 to 17:00, University of Edinburgh Business School). EFT is biennial — it comes round every two years, not every autumn — and it is run by the Edinburgh Centre for Financial Innovations out of the Business School, which gives it a research-led register rather than a sponsor-led one. It is a paid ticket; our listing does not carry a figure, so check the organiser's page before you plan around it. Two fintech days back to back is not a normal Edinburgh week, and if fintech is your field, the honest advice is to book both and write off the middle of the week.

The meetups. Tuesday evening, once the summit has wound up, GameDevEd's social (1 September, 18:00, OX184, free) does its regular thing on the Cowgate — indie developers, studio staff, artists and audio people, no talks, no agenda. Then Thursday brings Enterprise Agentic AI: From Strategy to Scale (3 September, 18:00 to 21:00, CreateFuture, free), where Stuart Bell takes on the widening gap between the number of organisations talking about AI agents and the number actually running them at scale.

Who should go where

Builders. Thursday at CreateFuture. Scotland Applied AI's evenings tend to be implementation-first, and "strategy to scale" is the part of the agent story that nobody has solved yet — which makes it the part worth arguing about in a room. Free, and the only technical evening on the board.

Fintech people and founders. Tuesday and Wednesday, and be deliberate about it. If you can only do one, the summit is the commercial room and EFT is the research room. Pick by what you need this quarter: customers, or a clearer view of where the field is going.

Investors. No pitch night, no demo day, nothing structured this week. The DeFi summit is where your Tuesday is best spent — a full day beats three evenings for actually finishing conversations.

Games people and anyone who just wants a pint. OX184, Tuesday, free. It is the low-commitment option in a week that otherwise asks for a day off work.

Venue corner: a week away from the Bayes Centre

Last week we pointed out that three of Edinburgh's four events were in the same building. This week, nothing is. The Bayes Centre sits the week out entirely and the calendar scatters across four rooms with four different characters: a Royal College in the New Town, the University's Business School, a Cowgate bar and a consultancy's office. Edinburgh's tech scene has a centre of gravity in the university's tech quarter, and weeks like this one — pulling towards finance at one end and a games crowd who have never set foot in Bayes at the other — are a decent test of how wide it actually reaches. Practical note: the two conference venues are daytime, professional buildings with front desks. Register in advance and bring the confirmation.

Worth knowing

Founders Hub has been renamed, and it finishes at 13:00. The Bayes Centre and ScotlandIS series returns on Friday 4 September, 09:30 to 13:00. The organisers renamed the event and confirmed those hours to us on 24 August, and we have corrected our listing to match. If you had it in your diary as running longer, adjust — the room closes at one.

The weekend really is empty. Nothing is listed between Friday and Monday. Some of that is the festival tail, some of it is things happening that never reach us — that gap is the answer to why you should send us what you are running.

On availability. Everything on our board shows as open, which is not a reliable read on how full a room is, and both conference days want booking ahead. Register where registration exists, and clear the daylight with your calendar now rather than on Monday night.
