Edinburgh tech events this week: five rooms arguing about AI, one asking for £199 (30 October – 5 November 2026)

Edinburgh tech events this week: five rooms arguing about AI, one asking for £199 (30 October – 5 November 2026)

Edinburgh has decided to spend the week arguing about who gets to decide. Of the twelve tech events in Edinburgh between Friday 30 October and Thursday 5 November, five are about governing AI — rights, policy, social care, management — and one is about building something with it. That ratio is a university city being itself, and it beats a mixer for networking, because everyone in the room has a position. Eleven are free. The twelfth costs £199. Wednesday is the pile-up: four rooms at once.

The weekend, first

Weekend of AI opens today at 10:15 in the Library of Mistakes, the financial-history library in the West End, free. The organisers bill it as three days of conversations about AI pitched away from the usual industry framing — and given the venue is a library devoted to how finance gets things wrong, that promise has some architecture behind it.

Saturday is edindies at LEVELS on Holyrood Road, 13:00, free. Edinburgh's independent game developers co-work and playtest each other's builds most Saturday afternoons. No programme, no badge, bring a laptop.

The one to move something for: Technomoral Conversations

Technomoral Conversations — AI and the Future of Fundamental Rights runs Tuesday 3 November at 18:00 in the Edinburgh Futures Institute's large event space, free. A fireside chat on how AI is reshaping speech, labour, privacy and freedom of movement, and the politics of all four.

It carries the highest interest score of anything on the Edinburgh page this week, and the reason is the framing. Most AI-and-ethics evenings stay at the level of principles. Fundamental rights aren't principles; they're enforceable, with case law attached, and the gap between what a model does and what a right guarantees is where the next two years of European regulation get fought. If you ship anything that ranks, scores, screens or moderates, that gap is your roadmap whether you've read it or not. Go for the floor as much as the stage — EFI pulls lawyers, policy people and engineers into one room, and they rarely agree.

Strand one: the people deciding what AI is allowed to do

The AI in social services symposium takes the COSLA Conference Centre for the day on Tuesday 3 November from 10:00, free. The Scottish Social Services Council on using AI responsibly in social work, social care and children's services — the highest-stakes deployment context in the country, and the one with least tolerance for a demo that mostly works.

Leading AI: Strategy, Governance & Policy Programme is Scottish Enterprise's full-day masterclass at the same venue on Wednesday 4 November from 09:30, free. It's aimed at SME leaders who have to make investment and governance calls rather than build models. If that's your job, it's a day well spent; if you write code, it isn't for you.

Wednesday night, Management, AI and the Social Life of Software Delivery at 18:30 in Skyscanner's Quartermile office, free. Marc Burgauer for BCS, arguing that the practices a development team writes down are not the practices it uses. Every engineering manager who has read their own process docs knows this and has no idea what to do about it.

Strand two: where the asks are

IA Conference Scotland 2026 opens Thursday 5 November at 08:00 at The Exchange, £199 — the Investment Association's flagship Scottish conference, 20-plus sessions across more than eight hours, with 300-plus attendees expected from the asset-management side.

Decode your Customers: Understand, Connect, Convert is Barclays Eagle Labs Scotland's half-day working session at CodeBase, Tuesday 3 November from 09:00, free: stalled revenue treated as a customer-understanding problem rather than a sales problem. The Edinburgh Startup Panel brings Bae HQ, HSBC Innovation Banking and CMS equIP to town on Wednesday 4 November at 18:00, free, on growing past the early stage — see Worth knowing before you plan your travel. Unfiltered Edinburgh is CodeBase's first-Wednesday drop-in morning at Castle Terrace, 08:30, free, coffee and a loose agenda. And Thursday Gathering #31 at EFI, 5 November 17:00, free, no ticket and no application — the thirty-first edition.

Hidden gem: Jev Jam

Jev Jam is at CodeBase on Monday 2 November from 16:00, free, run by new stacks. A short self-directed dev jam built around Jev, TypeSafe's new decision model: it doesn't write text, it takes messy unstructured input and returns typed decisions. We flagged it because it's the only room this week where you leave with something that compiles, and jams on a brand-new model are where the sharp edges get found first.

Who should go where

Investors, Thursday is your day and it costs money. IA Conference Scotland is the only room built around institutional capital, and £199 for 20-plus sessions with 300-plus asset-management people is the cheapest access to that crowd Edinburgh offers. Early-stage rather than institutional? Today's Weekend of AI is tagged for investors and costs nothing.

Founders, Tuesday morning and Wednesday night. Decode your Customers if revenue has stalled; the Bae HQ panel if the problem is scaling rather than selling. Skip the full-day governance programmes unless AI policy is literally your product — they're written for SME boards, not for you.

Builders, Monday and Wednesday. Jev Jam, then Burgauer at Skyscanner. Saturday at LEVELS if you make games.

Sales and marketing, you get one. Decode your Customers, Tuesday 09:00. The rest of the week is policy rooms, and policy rooms don't buy.

Worth knowing

A correction on last week. The Blockchain Scotland Meetup at the Bayes Centre on Thursday 29 October started at 17:30 and ran to 22:00. Our listing said 17:00 and no API route fixes the row, so the page is still wrong. The organiser's time is the right one.

The Edinburgh Startup Panel on Wednesday has no venue in our data. Nothing on the row, no address. Register first and treat the venue as the thing you confirm afterwards. It's also the only room this week without an event image.

Our price column defaults to free when an organiser publishes nothing, so eleven free rows is a number to treat with care. The community fixtures — edindies, Unfiltered, Thursday Gathering, Jev Jam — genuinely are free. For the full-day institutional programmes at COSLA, check the registration page before you build a day around it.

Coming up, and a correction worth having early: Linux Users' Group Edinburgh on 7 November has moved. It's no longer Old College. The new room is Canopy Kitchen & Courtyard, 1 Lauriston Place EH3 9EH.

Across the network

Dublin's week is the opposite of ours — eight events total, a €5 unconference with no agenda, and Women in AI Ireland running a panel on how you actually audit an AI system. If you're over for anything, the Dublin blog is here.

Twelve rooms, eleven free, one Wednesday that needs a decision: the full Edinburgh calendar is here. Running something here in December? Send it over — December is the month organisers forget to list and readers still search for.
