London tech this week: the bank-holiday flatline, then 120 seats at Google (28 Aug–3 Sep 2026)

For about one week a year, London's tech calendar behaves like a normal city's. This is that week. Our list of tech events in London between Friday 28 August and Thursday 3 September runs to three: one on Saturday, an absolute flatline across the bank-holiday weekend, and then two right at the end as September clears its throat. A city that usually makes you turn down three good rooms a night is asking nothing of you until Wednesday.

We're not going to inflate that into a full grid. So: what last week actually did, what the three are worth, and what September is already holding.

Last week did the heavy lifting

The seven days to 27 August were the busier half of this fortnight, and two of them only reached our listings after we published last Friday. Prof Ramesh Raskar of the MIT Media Lab ran Can AI Agent Startups Survive Corporate Capture? on Friday 21 August — a strategic framework for founders building on agent infrastructure, from the person behind Project NANDA, free, with the address released on approval. The same weekend, UK AI Agent Lab: Gemini Edition put a full day of Gemini and Gemma with Google DeepMind engineers into Imperial College on Saturday 22nd.

Then the civic-tech pair we flagged: Council Data Hack Day on the Saturday and Campaign Lab's Summer Hack Night on the Monday, both free, both at Newspeak House, followed by Novabook's Tech & Tonic drinks on Wednesday. Five rooms in six days, three of them hands-on. If you did the weekend, you've earned the flatline.

The Big One: 120 seats at Google, and the ratio is the point

The London AI Startup Conference 2026 runs Thursday 3 September from 09:00 at Google London, Central Saint Giles — free, half-day, and invitation-selective. The room is capped at 120 hand-picked participants: 60 UK AI startup founders, 30 CTOs and tech leaders, 20 VCs.

That ratio is the entire argument for going. One investor for every three founders, in a half-day format, is a density you don't get at a conference that sells 2,000 tickets and calls the corridor "networking". Nobody is there by accident, which cuts both ways — the conversations are shorter on small talk and much less patient with a vague pitch. Come with a number you can defend and a demo that loads.

The word to take seriously is selective. Free does not mean open: this is an application, not a registration, and a fortnight's notice is about as much runway as you're going to get. Do it today rather than on the Wednesday.

The other two, in order

Saturday 29 August — house london! | data hackathon, Newspeak House, 10:00–19:30, free. London has a housing crisis and the data to understand it already exists — planning records, tenure, transactions, stock. What doesn't exist is a decent set of tools on top of it. This is a one-day sprint putting data scientists, urban planners and developers in the same room to fix a bit of that. Newspeak House is in Bethnal Green, it's a Saturday, and a 10:00 start with a 19:30 finish is a full working day: sort your own lunch, and plan the route home as well as the route there rather than assuming a Zone 1 hop.

Wednesday 2 September — techUK screening: People's Emergency Briefing, at techUK, 14:00, free. A 50-minute film contextualising the science of the climate and nature crisis, then a panel. Two practical notes: it's an early-afternoon start, so it costs you an afternoon rather than an evening, and a screening-plus-panel is a genuinely easy room to talk in afterwards — everyone has just watched the same thing, which does most of the conversational work for you.

Who should go where

Founders. Thursday, and treat the application as the task rather than the day. If you're building in AI and you don't get in, the honest read is that your one-liner needs work — that's useful information for the price of a form.

Investors. This is the week's only serious dealflow room, and it's a good one: 60 pre-selected AI founders, no exhibition hall, done by lunch. If you're back from August and want one calibration session before the autumn cycle starts, that's it.

Builders. Saturday. The housing sprint is the only place in London this week where you'll write code next to strangers, and civic data projects have a habit of outliving the weekend they were started on.

Sales and marketing. Nothing for you until September, and we'd rather say so than send you to a mixer that isn't happening. Keep the evenings; the calendar refills the week after next.

Worth knowing

The blank stretch from Sunday to Tuesday is the bank holiday, not an oversight. Monday 31 August is the summer bank holiday, and London's organisers empty that weekend out every year without exception.

Worth knowing it exists if you're in that orbit — and worth knowing it collides with the Newspeak House sprint if you were hoping for both.

Campaign Lab's hack nights are back on Monday 7 September. Community Tooling Hack Day #2 is confirmed for Saturday 12 September, 11:00–16:00, Newspeak House. And Mindstone's September AI meetup is set for Tuesday 15 September, 18:00–21:00, at Inspire St James in Clerkenwell — free, with 600 spots, which is a considerably bigger room than the August edition.
