Manchester tech events this week: eleven of thirteen made the cut (11-17 Sep 2026)

Thirteen tech events in Manchester between Friday and Thursday. Eleven of them are on our curated city page.

That ratio is the story. Most weeks the work behind a guide like this is subtraction: strip out the paid AI masterclasses, the recycled bar mixers, the training courses wearing a meetup's clothes, and hand you what survives. This week there is almost nothing to strip. Twelve of the thirteen are free, and the only skill required is choosing which of Thursday's rooms you walk into.

Take Back Big Tech with Cory Doctorow runs Friday 11 September, 18:00, at House of Books and Friends, free, hosted by Better Media.

It takes the top slot for a reason that has little to do with the name on the poster. Manchester's calendar talks about AI relentlessly and about platform power almost never, and platform power decides whether the thing you build ever reaches anybody. Doctorow's case is specific rather than atmospheric: platforms decay in a predictable direction, interoperability is the lever that reverses it, and the capture was legal before it was technical. He named enshittification; this is the argument rather than the word.

Free, in a bookshop, on a Friday is also not how this city usually stages a serious argument. If you get one evening this week and you write software for a company that depends on somebody else's distribution, spend it here.

The week ahead, by discipline

AI, argued about like an engineering problem. Local AI at the End of the Tunnel, by Mike Irving is on Tuesday 15 September, 18:00, at Cross Street Chapel, free, from the Manchester Statistical Society: founded in 1833, now hosting a talk on running models on your own hardware and what that does to cost and privacy. The next evening, Beyond the Vibes: AI Agents Are Awesome (If You Stop Treating Them Like Magic) runs Wednesday 16 September, 17:00, at Department Bonded Warehouse, free, from Architecting Manchester: agents from an architecture standpoint, failure modes included. Then Practically AI: Adam Davis + Juliana Smith closes the week on Thursday 17 September, 18:30, at Matillion, free, on production AI engineering rather than prototypes.

If you own adoption rather than code, Salford AI Works Summit 2026 is the daytime alternative: Tuesday 15 September, 10:30, Salford Innovation Forum, free, on AI at work, skills and the regional programmes behind both.

Money and the rules around it. Thursday is unusually well served. North of England FinTech Innovation Challenge: Showcase Finale opens at 10:00 at 1 Spinningfields Square, free: finalist pitches, judging, and the region's fintech investors in the room because they have to be.

Later that day, LegaltechLive: Forum for Law Firms & Legal Tech at 17:00, Spinningfields Square, free, on document automation and AI review; then The Future of Consumer-Facing Products in Financial Services at 17:30, Softwire Manchester, free, treating regulation as a design constraint rather than a compliance chore.

Keeping things running. Cloud Native + Kubernetes Manchester meets Thursday 17 September, 18:00, at Bonded Warehouse, free, on production platform engineering. Same hour, Ministry of Testing Manchester x Hippo Digital is at Colony King Street, free, on team structure, career paths and the craft automation does not replace.

No projector required. AI + Coffee Manchester is Sunday 13 September, 11:00, at Campfield House, free, with no talks and no running order. On the wider listings tier, Network One's cybersecurity meetup runs Wednesday 16 September, 18:00, at The Anthologist St Peter's Square, free: a bar rather than a stage, and straightforward about it.

Last week, briefly

The flag is cleared. mcr.engineering | matillion ran on Thursday 10 September, 17:30 to 20:30, at Matillion, after weeks in which the group's own page read "Needs a location". We warned you on 28 August, hedged again on 4 September, and organiser Grant Spencer confirmed the venue with a full running order on 7 September. Three editions of caveats, one clean answer.

Around it, the all-day D365PPUG session took Microsoft UA92, HER+Data MCR turned nine at Autotrader, Queer in Tech ran at Spektrix and the Community Cyber Wargame worked its tabletop on Lloyd Street. Not one of those organisers is on Thursday's bill. This week is an entirely different set of communities, which is the healthiest fact on this page.

By the numbers

• 12 of 13 are free. The exception is a £399 one-day HR course.
• 7 of 13 land on Thursday 17 September; six of those cost nothing.
• 0 on Saturday, 0 on Monday.

Who should go where

Builders. Thursday evening, and it is a real three-way. Kubernetes at Bonded Warehouse if you own uptime, Ministry of Testing at Colony if you own quality, Practically AI at Matillion if you are shipping models. Choose by what is broken at work, not by what sounds newest.

Founders and investors. Thursday morning in Spinningfields, both of you. A showcase finale is one of the few local formats where investors turn up because they have judging to do, and founders can talk to them without a deck in hand. It is also the only structured dealflow on the board this week, and it is free.

Sales and marketing. Thursday at 17:00 or 17:30. Legal tech and consumer fintech are both buying rooms and both cost nothing. The £399 HR course at 11:00 that day is competing with six free alternatives; let it.

New to the city. Sunday, 11:00, Campfield House. Coffee, no agenda, no badge.

Worth knowing

• The duplicate D365PPUG row is gone. We were carrying the 9 September Manchester session twice; the second was rejected on 7 September and the city page shows it once now.
• Two Bonded Warehouses, a day apart. Wednesday's Architecting Manchester session lists "Department Bonded Warehouse"; Thursday's Cloud Native meetup lists "Bonded Warehouse". Those are the organisers' own venue names. Check your ticket rather than your memory.
• Thursday will not thin out. The three evening technical rooms start within half an hour of each other in three different buildings. Arriving late does not solve that; picking one does.
• Mindstone Manchester returns 22 September at Heron House, DiSH Manchester, free. Just outside this window, and the thing to diarise now.
