Manchester tech events this week: check which door your ticket actually opens (16-22 October 2026)

Manchester tech events 16-22 Oct 2026: the Green Circles AI hackathon's public ticket is mentees only, GM Innovation Expo is near capacity, Turing twice.

Which door? Ask it before you book anything in Manchester this week. Fifteen tech events sit on the city page between Friday and Thursday, thirteen free, and the biggest hands out four kinds of pass - only one of which the public link sells. Most weeks the networking events in Manchester need no decoding. This one does, so we have sorted the week by what it takes to get in.

The Big One: a hackathon where the public ticket is one role out of four

Green Circles Manchester | AI Hackathon | Supported by Barclays - Fri 16 Oct, 09:00, Renold Building, free.

<img src="https://joezfbehxxpcrpliygvo.supabase.co/storage/v1/object/public/hero-images/event-manchester-green-circles-manchester-ai-hackathon-supported-by-barclays-1016.webp" alt="Green Circles Manchester AI Hackathon at the Renold Building" class="w-full rounded-lg my-6" loading="lazy" />

Ten teams, one per Greater Manchester borough, each built the same way: a council problem-owner who actually works on the problem, a tech mentor, a business mentor, three mentees. Challenges handed over on the morning, prototypes judged by VCs and council leaders by the end of it, Barclays Eagle Labs and Silicon Mingle supporting.

Now the part no listing carries, ours included until today. The public registration is for mentees only - sixty places across ten teams. Mentors, council representatives and judges register by a separate route. If you opened that page planning to mentor or judge, the public link is the wrong door - ask the organisers for the mentor route rather than taking a mentee seat. Either way it is the best-designed free day on this calendar all month: a real brief, and a pitch at the end of it.

Doors that are simply open

Mon 19 Oct, 14:00 - The Inaugural Manchester Turing Lecture: Prof Sir Bashir M. Al-Hashimi, Alliance Manchester Business School, free. A new Digital Futures series opens, room G.003.

Mon 19 Oct, 15:30 - MIOIR Seminar Series with Professor Erik Stam, same building, free. Utrecht's professor of strategy, and the only hybrid row on the page.

Tue 20 Oct, 18:00 - The 9 Are Abroad - Or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love AI, Cross Street Chapel, free. The Manchester Statistical Society hosting Daniel Dresner, Professor of Cyber Security at the University of Manchester. A talk with an argument, not a slide deck.

Tue 20 Oct, 18:00 - or DMLab North-West: Accessible music technology at the School of Digital Arts, free. Hands-on, for Disabled and non-Disabled musicians and technologists.

Wed 21 Oct, 09:30 - NVIDIA GTC Keynote Watch Party, Sister - Renold Building, free. Jensen Huang's GTC keynote live from Berlin, watched with other people.

Wed 21 Oct, 12:30 - #exabits Computing History Tour: Alan Turing's Manchester, from Piccadilly Station, free. Ninety minutes on foot with Alan O'Donohoe.

Sun 18 Oct, 13:00 - The Startup Roundtable, free, for people actively building rather than thinking about it.

Doors with a gate

GM Innovation Expo 2026 - Wed 21 Oct, 09:30, Manchester Central Convention Complex, free. Greater Manchester's flagship innovation day: SMEs, startups, universities, investors, policymakers and the region's support apparatus in one hall. The gate here is capacity - it is the only Manchester row reading near capacity. Register before the weekend.

Two rooms gate by audience, which is the point of them. She Scales: Female Founders Connection and Co-working - Wed 21 Oct, 10:00, NatWest Accelerator Manchester Hub, free - is the Accelerator's monthly female founders morning. Manchester STEM Women Graduate Careers Event - Wed 21 Oct, 13:30, The Bridgewater Hall, free - is for women and non-binary STEM students and recent graduates: where this city's STEM juniors are on Wednesday.

Venture Cafe Manchester: One Year On - Thu 22 Oct, 17:00, free - marks a year of Thursday Gatherings by showing what came through the room. Our row carries no venue; the event's own text places it at Sister in the Renold Building, where every gathering this year has run.

Practically AI Manchester - October (Talks TBC) closes the week - Thu 22 Oct, 18:00, AZoNetwork, free - two talks on what the engineering job becomes when AI writes more of it.

Doors you pay for

Two, all week. Branch Leadership Summit - Mon 19 Oct, 09:00, Treehouse Hotel Manchester, GBP 195 - a day for engineering and technology leaders, built to spend as much time on the room as the stage. Worth it if you run the org chart, not if you are on it. Network One: Fintech Founders & Finance Innovators Meetup Manchester - Wed 21 Oct, 18:00, The Anthologist St Peter's Square, GBP 30 - founders, developers and investors around financial services.

FAQ corner

I registered. Am I going?

Not necessarily, and three shapes of no are live across our network this week. Manchester has the subtlest: a public ticket that is really one role out of several, as above. Elsewhere organisers take payment and still withhold tickets pending extra questions, and approval-gated rooms only count you once the host replies. Open your order, check a ticket issued, and check which role you bought.

Across the network

Birmingham is having its biggest week of the year. Birmingham Tech Week runs 19-25 October and that page has gone from fifteen events to thirty-two. The one we would take a train for: the AI Symposium at The ICC, Wed 21 Oct, 09:00, free, with Tom Loosemore of Public Digital, co-founder of GOV.UK, keynoting. Ninety minutes down the line, no ticket price. The rest is on the Birmingham listings page.

Who should go where

Builders - Friday, if a mentee seat is honestly yours, and the mentor route if it is not. Then Wednesday morning for the GTC keynote and Thursday night for Practically AI. Skip the Wednesday expo: it is a funding-and-support hall, not a technical one, and you will spend the day being sold to.

Founders - Wednesday at Manchester Central, and register today, because near capacity means it. Sunday's roundtable is the low-key version of the same conversation. Hold the GBP 195 unless you lead engineering.

Investors - a quiet week, and we would rather say so. No demo day, no pitch night. Thursday's Venture Cafe anniversary is where the dealflow sits.

Sales and marketing - thinnest lens here. If you sell into financial services, Wednesday's GBP 30 fintech evening is the only room where your buyers are the majority. Otherwise, sit it out.

Worth knowing

  • Sunday's roundtable has two addresses in one listing. Our row gives Northern Pour; the event's own description places it at Mala on Dale Street. Same 13:00 either way - check your confirmation before crossing town.
  • Submitted late to last week's Manchester Health Series? You have not been forgotten. We filled in the missing address (No.1 Circle Square, 1 Circle Square, 3 Symphony Park, M1 7FS), but its action deadline had passed by the time we found it. Late submissions get their connections two to eight weeks out, not on the day.
  • Coming up: Nothing Looked Fake: Cyber Awareness for All, 28 October at Campfield. Outside this week, on the page now.

Before you go

Fifteen events, thirteen free, one with a door policy we had to go and ask about. All of it is on the Manchester listings page. Running something here we have missed? Tell us - we would rather publish a correction than hype.
