Manchester tech events this week: the free ticket hiding in Thursday evening (18-24 Sep 2026)

Turn up at the AWS offices in the Hanover Building on Thursday evening and you leave with a conference ticket worth GBP 75. Everyone who attends AWS Cloud Women Manchester's September meetup gets a free place at AWS Community Summit Manchester on 1 October at O2 Victoria Warehouse — food and drink included all day. That is the best-value hour on any city calendar we publish this week, and it costs nothing to take. The Big One: a free meetup that pays for October

AWS Cloud Women Manchester — September Meetup runs Thursday 24 September from 17:30 at the AWS offices, Hanover Building, Hanover Street — talks and networking across the cloud community, free.

Take the meetup on its own terms and it is a solid cloud evening. Take it as a route into the Summit and it is the strongest offer in the network this week. AWS Community Summit Manchester is the region's big community-run AWS day; it landed in our database this week after we flagged it missing. The group also runs a DEI track on the Summit morning, so the Thursday room and the October track are genuinely connected rather than a marketing bolt-on. No ballot, no discount code, no hoop: attend on the 24th, get the ticket. If you have been meaning to go to a Summit and could not justify the spend, this is how you go.

The week ahead, by theme

Security and industry, before lunch. Tuesday morning stacks three. AMPI technology showcase at Sister's Renold Building, 09:30, on the machinery behind UK manufacturing. Women in Cyber: Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Development, 09:30 on Lloyd Street, on leadership paths and starting a security business. And CloudGuard's Readiness Roadshow cyber clinic at 10:00 — an honest audit of where your security actually sits, which is a different proposition from another threat-landscape slide deck. Wednesday morning continues it with AI, Cyber and the Future of Business, 09:30 at Four New Bailey in Salford.

The AI evenings. Mindstone Manchester — September AI Meetup takes Tuesday 22 September, 18:00, Heron House at DiSH, 47 Lloyd Street with a confirmed lineup: Kevin Coyle, Simon Groom and Jason Holloway. The three talks are "Coherent by Design: Shipping Enterprise Design Systems with AI", "Write Once, Tailor Forever: a Live AI Workflow" and "Me use caveman skill. Me think big. Me save big." That last title tells you what kind of room this is: practitioners, short talks, discussion rather than broadcast.

For a different register, the University of Manchester's Centre for Digital Humanities annual lecture on Wednesday at 15:00 is Dr Adi Kuntsman on "When image generators go to war" — visual AI and political imagination, in the Samuel Alexander Building. Not a networking event. Worth an afternoon anyway.

Craft and tooling. Dot Net North's lightning talks at the Peninsula Building, Tuesday 18:15, eight to twelve minutes a piece. ProductTank Manchester runs a public speaking workshop at Grayce on Wednesday 18:00, aimed at people who might speak at a future ProductTank — the most directly useful evening of the week if you want to be on a stage next year. And the university R user group's Working with Git and GitHub in RStudio at Thursday lunchtime is a proper skills session for researchers who version-control by filename.

Money and markets. DD LIVE 26: Smart Data and the Future Mortgage Journey, Wednesday 18:00 at Everyman St John's, for anyone building in lending. Built Locally, Scaling Globally from Venture Cafe on Thursday 17:00 is the US-expansion conversation Manchester founders keep having in private.

Thursday, five deep. Between 17:00 and 18:00 on the 24th, five rooms open: Venture Cafe's US session, AWS Cloud Women, PBIMCR with Leon Gordon and Vito Schittone at Canopius on Barbirolli Square, Manchester DM #13 at WPP, and PyDataMCR September at AutoTrader Circle Square. You get one. Choose on what you want to leave with, not on who is hosting.

Last week, briefly

Empower — Women in Technology ran on Thursday 17 September with 400-plus people in the room, and we were late listing it. Starling and Engine by Starling put on one of the largest women-in-tech gatherings this city sees all year, and it should have been on our page weeks before it was. We would rather say that than quietly fix it. MD Future 26 also ran across 16-17 September, which is why this week's Wednesday and Thursday feel lighter at the conference end than the meetup end.

Across the network

Mindstone is running the same "ButterflAI Effect" edition in three of our cities this week: Manchester on Tuesday, then Milan and Rome on Wednesday 23 September. If you have colleagues in either, it is a rare chance to compare notes on the same material across three scenes in one week.

Who should go where

Builders — if you only have one evening, make it Thursday and make it AWS Cloud Women, purely on the October ticket. If you want the technical depth instead, PyData at Auto Trader is the deepest room of the night.

Founders — Venture Cafe's US-expansion session on Thursday, and Mindstone on Tuesday if you are trying to work out what AI actually changes in your product rather than in your pitch deck.

Investors — thin week here, honestly. Nothing on this page is built around dealflow. Your best use of Manchester this week is a coffee around Tuesday's Women in Cyber morning, which is where the region's security founders will be.

Sales and marketing — Manchester DM #13 at WPP on Thursday. Same slot as everything else, so decide early.

Worth knowing

The AWS ticket is the headline, but read the mechanism. Attendance at the 24 September meetup is what unlocks the 1 October Summit place. The Summit is on our Manchester listings now; it was not a fortnight ago, and we only found the free-ticket route by asking the organisers.

Two addresses collide on Tuesday. Women in Cyber at 09:30 and Mindstone at 18:00 are both on Lloyd Street at M2 5LE. Same building, twelve hours apart — a genuinely easy double if you are travelling in.

Two seminars, one subject, one slot. Thursday 13:00 carries both "Fire and Ice: The Conception, Birth and Infancy of Cybernetics" and "Meat the Machine or the Hidden History of Cybernetics" — the same University of Manchester seminar series reaching us through two listings. Book whichever page you land on; do not plan to attend both.

One date to check. The Digital Transformation Conference row shows a 24 September start with "October 2026" in its title. Confirm directly with the organiser before travelling.
