Manchester tech events this week: sorted by discipline, because Thursday has ten of them (2–8 October 2026)

Manchester tech events 2–8 Oct: the Cambridge x Manchester summit moved to 08:45–13:30, graphene at the NGI, and ten things on Thursday alone.

Six of Manchester's twenty-five tech events this week are tagged AI. In London, this week, it's eighteen out of twenty-four. Make of that what you like — we'd say Manchester spent the week on graphene, testing, Postgres, energy optimisation and getting research out of a building, and is the better for it. All twenty-five networking events in Manchester read free on our page, and we'll come back to the one we don't entirely believe. Sorted below by discipline, because Thursday alone carries ten of them and day-by-day would only tell you that.

Last week, briefly

Fuzzy Labs ran MLOps.WTF #11 at the GM Digital Security Hub on Wednesday — a panel on sovereignty in AI, framed as "AI can be Chinese or American, but not both". Tom from Fuzzy Labs sent us the shape of it beforehand: doors 17:40, kick off 18:00, wrap 20:00, Isaac signing people in at reception, pizza. Carry that twenty-minute gap forward — our listings usually hold one of those numbers, not both, so arrive on the organiser's doors time.

The week by discipline

Materials, silicon and hardware

From Discovery to Impact: How Graphene Is Transforming Innovation — Tue 6 Oct, 09:00, National Graphene Institute, free. On translating graphene out of the lab and into industrial product — a session no other UK city can run.

The only weekend event is also the most unusual: the Manchester Taiwanese Association screening A Chip Odyssey, Sat 3 Oct, 10:30, Friends' Meeting House — a semiconductor documentary plus talks, and real context if you work near hardware or supply chain. One caveat below. Then Tech Showcase Manchester at the RNCM, Wed 7 Oct, 14:00: demos from companies and research groups across Greater Manchester.

Data, platforms and architecture

Four for the people who keep things running. Manchester Data Platform User Group at XYZ Works and PostgreSQL England North at the AWS offices in the Hanover Building are both Thu 8 Oct (17:45 and 18:00), free and properly technical. Deciding where to invest in architecture with Wardley Mapping — Wed 7 Oct, 17:00, Department Bonded Warehouse — is hands-on, not a lecture. And AIoT Hub: From Sensor to Insight with Cumulocity runs online, Tue 6 Oct, 18:00: a fortnight ago that row was a stub reading "AIoT Hub - TBA", and it now has a real session on industrial IoT data behind it.

Testing, mobile and craft

MCR.TEST: Under the Bonnet takes over the Autotrader offices, Thu 8 Oct, 17:30, free and hands-on. NSManchester meets at Neo on Mon 5 Oct, 18:00 for Swift, iOS and Mac.

Founders and the commercial end

Digital Clubhouse Summit 2026 opens the week — Fri 2 Oct, 08:00, The Bridgewater Hall, free, a full day on the regional digital agenda. Same morning, The Shortlist works one specific account-based marketing problem at Campfield (09:00). Ideas Unlocked — Tue 6 Oct, 10:00, The Atrium, University Place — is about making an early idea fundable. The Founders Playbook at Manchester Museum (Thu 8 Oct, 17:00) puts founders who have actually built companies, Holiferm among them, in conversation. Recruiters and HR have Sourcing & Social at Colony King Street, Wed 7 Oct, 12:00.

Civic, energy and health

Growing the skills for a digital economy — Open Data Manchester's GM Digital Blueprint session, Mon 5 Oct, 14:00, The Tootal Buildings. EcoHome Lab hosts FlexMeasures maintainer Nicolas Höning online, Thu 8 Oct, 18:00. Preparing Healthcare Students for AI-Enabled Practice is at the Christabel Pankhurst Building, Thu 8 Oct, 10:00.

And the category to skip: two general "AI will transform your business" afternoons sit on the calendar this week, pitched at much the same room. If you want the argument rather than the pitch, THE FUTURE OF AI: Eleanor Drage and Cecilia Rikap in conversation at Blackwell's, Wed 7 Oct, 18:30, is free and considerably sharper.

Organiser spotlight: the University of Manchester Innovation Festival

Five of this week's twenty-five belong to one festival: Ideas Unlocked and Powerhouse of Innovation Showcase (Wed 7 Oct, 11:00, Whitworth Hall), The Founders Playbook, the Manchester Venture Builder Demo Day with Venture Café (Thu 8 Oct, 17:00, SISTER), and the summit below. All free. One institution carrying a fifth of the city's week, quietly.

The Big One: Cambridge x Manchester — and check your ticket

The Cambridge x Manchester Partnership Innovation Summit — Thu 8 Oct, Sister – Renold Building, 32a Altrincham Street, M1 7JR, free. It now runs 08:45 to 13:30. The organiser moved it on 24 September from 09:00–12:00: fifteen minutes earlier and ninety minutes longer. Eventbrite's own change notice warns that tickets already saved to a phone wallet keep the old times, so if you booked early, the ticket in your pocket is wrong.

Why it earns the slot: two research ecosystems that usually compete for the same money, sitting down to work out what they can do jointly, in front of the researchers, spinout founders and investors who would have to make it real. Four and three-quarter hours, no ticket price, and a room you could not assemble on purpose.

Who should go where

Founders have the strongest week in the network outside London, and it's all free. Ideas Unlocked on Tuesday if the company is still a research idea; The Founders Playbook on Thursday for the unedited version from people who built one; the Demo Day the same evening to see what the cohort is shipping.

Investors, you have two: Cambridge x Manchester in the morning and the Venture Builder Demo Day at 17:00, same Thursday, same building at SISTER. That's the whole week, honestly — but it is a well-arranged one.

Builders: Thursday is overloaded, so choose on discipline, not hype — data platform at XYZ Works, Postgres at AWS, testing at Autotrader. Or Tuesday's graphene morning, for a reminder of what the city is actually good at.

Sales and marketing: The Shortlist on Friday for ABM, Sourcing & Social on Wednesday for talent. Give the general mixers a miss — the specialist rooms are better.

Worth knowing

  • Three listings have no venue. Two are online (AIoT Hub, EcoHome Lab). The third, Power Up Your Digital, Creative & Tech Business (Wed 7 Oct, 09:00, GM Business Growth Hub, free) is in person, but the address genuinely has not been published — it comes with the RSVP.
  • A Chip Odyssey shows as free on our page, but that is our default rather than the organiser's claim. No price was ever published, so it may be paid. Check before you turn up expecting to pay nothing.
  • An "available" ticket badge on our pages is not a promise. Our ingest currently flattens sold-out, waitlist and invite-only back to "available", so on that one field trust the organiser's page over ours.
  • At corporate-office venues, bring photo ID in the name you booked under. Autotrader and the AWS Hanover Building both count this week. Three organisers in the last fortnight have explicitly required it, all at company offices, so treat it as the default rather than the exception.
  • Next week is heavier still: Data Decoded MCR at Manchester Central on 14 October, the Manchester Health Series on 15 October (08:30–12:30, from the organiser's own listing), and the Successify Shopify meetup on 15 October, already near capacity.

Before you go

All 25, including the ones we've steered you away from, are on the Manchester listings page. Thursday is the decision: ten events, one evening, no version where you win by attempting three. Running something in Greater Manchester we haven't listed? Send it over — we'd rather be told than find it the morning after.
