Manchester tech events this week: the whole week is Thursday

Manchester tech events 23-29 Oct: nothing until Tuesday, then six rooms on Thursday.

Nothing on the Manchester city page until Tuesday. Then ten tech events in three days, six of them on Thursday 29th. A dead front half and a stacked back half is still a good week here; it just needs planning. So the networking events below are grouped by what collides with what.

Tuesday and Wednesday: four rooms, no clashes

Data Horror Stories - Cripes! is Open Data Manchester's annual Halloween session with PyData Manchester, at Altogether Otherwise on Hanover Street. Doors 18:00, talks 18:30, close 20:30. Short talks about data going badly wrong — the organisers cite an air traffic control mix-up that cost millions and a Google Maps error that got the wrong house demolished. Claim a slot beforehand, or take a quick-fire one on the night.

Wednesday runs three, spaced out. FUEL Manchester 2026 at No.1 Circle Square, 09:00, free: a breakfast panel of nine operating founders instead of a keynote, among them Sam White of Stella Insurance, Thomas Keighley of urfuture and Sid Sethi of Specscart, plus former England rugby league head coach Shaun Wane. A second part puts 25 selected businesses into masterclass pods, by separate application.

Nothing Looked Fake: Cyber Awareness for All at Campfield, 16:00, free, three hours. Driscop walk through real scams on the basis that the old tells are dead — attackers use genuine login pages and the target's own actions now. Pitched at everyone, which makes it the rare session you can send a non-technical colleague to.

Context, Retrieval & Compromised Agents is Manchester AI at Accenture's Circle Square office, 17:45. António Morais and Akbar Gumbira, both ML engineers at Elastic, on building better context with visual intelligence and semantic retrieval. Then Shade Obiti of Accenture demoing a compromised agent that keeps coming back after the obvious security measures. Gated: RSVP yes, complete the organiser's form, bring photo ID.

Thursday: six events, and you get two of them

Daytime is a three-way choice. Founders Coffee Club at Clockwise on Dickinson Street, 10:00, £17.50 including a coworking day pass — founders only, host-approved, no speeches, and the hosts introduce you rather than leaving you to work it. AI SOCIAL CLUB: Creative AI for Beginners runs 11:00 to 17:00 at SEESAW, £45, 25 places, laptop required: Stephanie Ronan-Chlond, a documentary-trained filmmaker, on generative models, image and video tools, and where ethics sit in practice. It costs you the whole day. Those Serendipitous Mavericks sits inside it, 13:00 to 15:00, free, at the University of Manchester: Dr Colin Williams on the Ratio Club, the dining group British scientists formed after Wiener published Cybernetics in 1948. Turing was a member.

Then three from 17:00. Grow AI opens the evening (below). PBIMCR presents 'FabCon Europe Key Takeaways' at ANS in Hulme: doors 17:30, talks 18:00 to 19:15, Martin Brierley and Ian Pike demoing the new Fabric features, Git integration and Direct Lake, then pizza. Jonny Muir: Service Design at CTI Digital on Peter Street: pizza from 18:00, talk 18:45, on Wayfinder, Block Grid, Umbraco Automate and starting from the service rather than the build.

Workable pairs: coffee morning then Grow AI; the AI Social Club day and nothing after; or Ratio Club then one evening talk. Fabric and Umbraco are 45 minutes and a tram ride apart, so pick one.

Who should go where

Founders, take Wednesday morning and Thursday morning. FUEL is nine people who have actually grown something, free, before work. Founders Coffee Club is the only morning room here genuinely restricted to founders — the host approval keeps the recruiters out, and the day pass means you get work done after.

Builders: Wednesday at Accenture is the week's one technical pick, on the unglamorous half of agents — retrieval quality and what happens when one gets taken over. Thursday, choose by stack: Fabric and Power BI to ANS, content-heavy projects to CTI Digital.

Data people: Tuesday. Practitioners describing their own failures beats a vendor talk about avoiding them.

Investors, there's one room. Grow AI on Thursday puts the cluster money and the university pipeline in the same place. Nothing else on the city page this week is built for dealflow.

Organiser spotlight: Digital Futures

Two of the fortnight's best free rooms are theirs: the inaugural Manchester Turing Lecture with Prof Sir Bashir M. Al-Hashimi on 19 October, and Thursday's Ratio Club seminar, second of nine monthly Meat the Machine sessions. University-run, free, no sponsor slot. A standing commitment that isn't a pub.

First time at one of these?

Arrive at doors, not start time — Data Horror Stories, the FabCon recap and the Umbraco night all put food before the talks. Three have a gate: Founders Coffee Club approves people individually, Manchester AI wants a form and photo ID, Data Horror Stories runs a code of conduct.

Worth knowing

AI Social Club is 11:00 at SEESAW, not 11:30 at The Salutation Pub. Our listing had both wrong; the organiser's registration page is right. 86 Princess Street, M1 6NG, 11:00 to 17:00. Corrected 19 October.

The Ratio Club seminar starts at 13:00, not 14:00. Also ours. It runs 13:00 to 15:00, which moves it from afternoon into lunch.

Data Horror Stories is ticketed and paid, and the organiser publishes no figure, so we're not quoting one. A blank price on our pages means missing, not free.

A Meetup RSVP does not hold you a seat at Manchester Tech Network. The real registration is an OkGather membership at £2.99 a month. Their November and December dates are listing-only here for now.

Manchester Advances in Data Science and AI Conference, 2-3 November: unverifiable. Published prices were £75 early career and £150 general with booking closing 29 October, but the registration page 404s and the organiser's site has moved on to a 2027 event. Not listed until someone confirms it runs.

Clocks go back on Sunday 25 October, and one listing feed we read renders Manchester times an hour behind local before that date and correctly after. Check anything you booked for this weekend. Our pages also can't show sold-out or near-capacity: last Wednesday's GM Innovation Expo was near capacity while the page read as bookable.

The Big One: Grow AI, Thursday 17:00

Venture Café marked a year of Thursday Gatherings last Thursday. This week it hands the room over. GROW AI: From Innovation to Adoption in Greater Manchester introduces a £12.8m partnership between Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester, funded by the Local Innovation Partnerships Fund, to build the AI cluster across the city region.

The substance is the Challenge AI Labs: corporates, SMEs, community groups, academics and students put on the same problem, with challenges shaped by whoever owns them, not handed down by a programme team. The first Lab is health, with Health Innovation Manchester; selected companies go on to build with NHS partners. Creative and Digital, Advanced Materials and Manufacturing, and Net Zero follow.

Venture Café's format applies: open doors, no ticket barrier, Sister in the Renold Building. If you want into a Challenge Lab, this is where you find out how.
