Manchester tech this week: two events, one venue we had to correct, and a September that's already full (28 Aug–3 Sep 2026)

Put one thing from this guide in the diary and make it Thursday 3 September, 18:00, Colony King Street. That's Twilio, it's free, and it's the anchor of a fortnight. Manchester's list of tech events for 28 August to 3 September runs to exactly two — that one and an online session on the Tuesday — because the last Thursday of August swallowed everything in sight. Five events went off on 27 August alone.

Short week, then. The honest way to write it is to go deep on the two and then look properly at September, which is already filling up faster than August ever did.

The Big One: Conversations in the AI era

Conversations in the AI era | Builder Community Meetup runs Thursday 3 September, 18:00–21:00, at Colony King Street, hosted by Twilio, free.

First, a correction we owe you: our listing carried a placeholder venue for this one. It's Colony King Street, confirmed, and the record is fixed. If you saved this to your calendar before this week, check what address it kept.

The premise is narrower than "AI meetup", which is why it's worth an evening. Most of what people are actually shipping with AI right now resolves to a conversation — chat, voice, messaging, something that takes a human turn and returns a machine one. That's a specific engineering problem with specific failure modes: latency you can hear, state that leaks between turns, a fallback path for when the model says something it shouldn't. Twilio hosting means the room skews to people who have shipped that under load rather than people who have read about it, and a builder meetup in Manchester tends to reward the person who brings a broken thing over the person who brings a deck.

It's also the only in-person room in the city this week, so it isn't competing with anything — a rare luxury after last Thursday.

The other one: an IoT device a seven-year-old will actually use

Clifford Agius presents "Moti-Me": an IoT-powered therapeutic device paired with a mobile app, built to turn structured physiotherapy into something a child will keep doing.

Adherence is the hard part of paediatric physio, and it's a design problem long before it's a hardware one. A cross-stack walkthrough — device, .NET MAUI app, the bit in between — with a real clinical constraint at the end of it beats another framework tour. It's a livestream: an hour, no travel, take it at your desk.

Last week, briefly: we said three-way Thursday, it turned into five

We called 27 August a three-way clash. It closed as a five-way. Alongside the Fabric murder mystery, Aware x Mollie and Rust Manchester — which started at 18:30, not 18:00, and our listing now says so after the organiser confirmed it — two more landed on the same night: PyDataMCR's August talks at Krakenflex — Josh Hayes opening with The Meaning of Lift, on the gap between the question a stakeholder asks and the question they meant — and Thinking with AI at Accenture, the launch of a new group aimed squarely at everyone told to "figure out AI" at work and left to it.

Five free rooms in one evening, with Venture Café still on its summer break. That's not a scheduling accident so much as a scene with more supply than nights.

Who should go where

Builders. Thursday. If you touch voice, chat, messaging or agents that have to talk to a human, the Twilio room is the most concentrated version of your problem available locally this month.

Founders. Also Thursday, but go for the engineers rather than the host. A builder meetup is a hiring room disguised as a talk; the people worth meeting are the ones asking sharp questions from the third row.

Investors. Nothing for you this week — no pitch night, no demo evening, no showcase. September is where your diary is. Skip it and lose nothing.

Everyone who's been told to "do AI" at work. Tuesday's livestream is the low-cost option, and the new group behind last Thursday's launch is one to watch for October.

First-timer's note

Two events is a good week to start, precisely because neither is a scrum. Arrive close to the stated time rather than fashionably late — talks usually start within fifteen minutes, and walking in late at Colony is more conspicuous than it would be in a 200-person room. Free and registered still means telling the organiser if you can't come; small meetups order food against the headcount. And the best opener in this city is not "what do you do" but "what are you working on".
