Tech events in Manchester this week: nothing until Tuesday, then nine rooms in three days (4–10 Sep 2026)

Last week we told you Manchester's calendar held two events and said we'd rather admit that than pad it. This week the correction goes the other way. Our list of tech events in Manchester for 4–10 September is empty on Friday, empty all weekend, empty on Monday — and then puts nine rooms into three days, four of them on Thursday evening alone. Every one of those nine is free.

The one thing on Friday 4 September is The Deep Dive: Practical AI for Micro and Small Businesses from GM Business Growth Hub, 09:00, free, venue confirmed to registrants — an introductory session aimed squarely at very small businesses. If you write code for a living, it isn't for you.

The Big One: a free full day at Microsoft UA92

Manchester (All Day) D365PPUG — September 2026 runs Wednesday 9 September, registration from 08:45, through to 16:30, at Microsoft UA92 on Talbot Road, free.

The Dynamics 365 and Power Platform UK User Group is doing something Manchester rarely gets: a full conference-scale programme covering Dynamics 365, Power Platform, CRM and ERP, in a working day, at no cost. This city's community scene is overwhelmingly evening-shaped — an hour of talks, an hour of pizza, home. A full day is a different proposition. You get depth instead of highlights, and you get the corridor time that makes a user group worth joining rather than just attending.

It's also, bluntly, the least glamorous headline we've run for Manchester — nobody posts a launch video about ERP. But the largest single gathering of Power Platform practitioners in the north, free, in Microsoft's own building, gets overlooked precisely because it doesn't market itself. If your organisation runs on this stack, one day here beats a quarter of vendor webinars.

The week ahead, day by day

Tuesday 8 September — three at once, all free. Northern Azure User Group meets at Morson Edge, 18:00, for talks on running Azure workloads properly: architecture, cost, and the operational detail that never makes a keynote. Manchester AI Collective is at ANS Group, 18:00 — one of the city's largest AI meet-ups, with practitioner talks on what teams here are actually shipping, then open networking. And Manchester Tech Network's evening drinks start at 19:00 at Slug and Lettuce: developers, product managers, designers and UX people, no agenda beyond meeting people who do what you do. The later start means you can do a talk first and still make it.

Wednesday 9 September. The all-day Power Platform session above, and then in the evening AI at Work: How Are We Actually Adopting It? at Cantarus, 18:00, free, from the Manchester and North West Umbraco community. The framing is the good bit: the gap between AI adoption slides and what teams have genuinely put into their workflow. That's a question most AI meetups carefully avoid asking out loud.

Thursday 10 September — four rooms, one evening. mcr.engineering | matillion runs 17:30–20:30 at Matillion, free, drawing senior engineers, architects and engineering leaders from across Greater Manchester. Queer in Tech, hosted by Spektrix, also 17:30–20:30, at Spektrix's Deansgate office: talks, networking and a room that is genuinely easier to walk into than most, allies included. HER+Data MCR turns nine at Auto Trader, 18:00, with talks from women working in data across the city. And there's the wargame, below.

Hidden gem: a cyber incident you get to play

The Community Cyber Wargame — Exercise Kirbymere is on Thursday 10 September, 18:00, at 47 Lloyd St, free. It's a hands-on tabletop incident exercise for the Manchester security community — you work the scenario rather than watch someone present one.

We're flagging it because it's the lowest-profile thing on Thursday and the highest-effort. Tabletop exercises are how organisations find out that their incident plan lives in a document nobody can open during an incident, and doing one in a room of strangers is far more instructive than doing one with your own team, who share all your blind spots. If you've ever been on call and thought "we'd probably cope", this is the cheapest way to find out whether that's true.

Venue corner: Matillion

Matillion's offices have quietly become one of Manchester's default rooms. They hosted the Power BI user group's August meetup, they host mcr.engineering on Thursday, and Practically AI is there again on 17 September. Three different communities, one building, inside a month.

That's a pattern worth naming. Manchester's best technical evenings mostly happen in the offices of companies that actually ship data and engineering products, not in hired event spaces — and a company that keeps opening its doors to groups it doesn't run is doing more for local hiring than any careers page. Practically: it's an office rather than a bar, so a 17:30 start means turning up on time is normal, and talks begin before people have finished their first drink.

Who should go where

Builders. Thursday, and the choice is about what you want to leave with. mcr.engineering if you want senior peers and a hiring-adjacent room; the cyber wargame if you'd rather leave with a reflex than a contact.

Founders. Tuesday. Manchester AI Collective at ANS is the better of the two 18:00 rooms for you, because practitioner talks about what's shipping tell you more about who to hire than a founder panel would. Follow it with the Tech Network drinks at 19:00 if you still have energy.

Anyone in a big organisation's tech function. Wednesday, all day, at UA92. Then the Umbraco session in the evening if you want the honest version of the same conversation.

Everyone. One steer: several paid one-day "AI masterclass" courses are circulating at three figures a seat this week, and we've kept them off the city page. Between a free full day at UA92 and a free AI meetup on Tuesday, you'd have to work hard to justify the spend.

Worth knowing

mcr.engineering has a venue now. Last week we flagged that the Meetup page still read "Needs a location" and told you to check before travelling. It's confirmed: Matillion, Thursday 10 September, 17:30–20:30. Thanks to everyone who checked and told us.

Mindstone Manchester is a pen now, not a pencil. We listed it as an unconfirmed date in the last edition. Mindstone Manchester — September AI Meetup is set for Tuesday 22 September at Heron House, DiSH Manchester, free. Worth knowing beyond the date: Mindstone is openly looking for people to speak at, sponsor or host its meetups — if you've been meaning to get on a stage locally, that's an unusually low-friction door.

Thursday's four-way clash is not a scheduling accident. It's the same pattern as 27 August: a scene with more supply than nights. If you organise in Manchester, Friday and Monday are wide open.
