Rome tech events this week: a square in Centocelle spends three nights arguing about cyborgs (11–17 Sep 2026)

The busiest venue in Rome this week is not a hub, a hotel or a university. It is Piazzale delle Gardenie, a square in Centocelle, where Festival Là Fuori has parked five free evenings across Friday, Saturday and Sunday and spends most of them asking whether you are already a cyborg.

That is a very Roman way to open the autumn. Nineteen events sit on our Rome tech events listings between 11 and 17 September, thirteen of them free, and the week splits into three scenes that barely speak to each other: a street festival, an institution, and the small working ecosystem in between. Rome is the earliest-stage city we cover, so we would rather show you that split than flatten it.

The one to build around

ETHRome IV - 2026 — Urbe Hub, from Friday 11 September at 16:00, free.

ETHRome returns for a fourth edition and, for the first time, in a building of its own: Urbe Hub in Testaccio. Forty hand-picked builders, three days, one weekend of building. Free, and selective — this is not a room you drift into after work, it is one you were chosen for.

If you did not apply it still matters to you. A hackathon that has survived four editions and grown into a permanent home is the closest thing Rome has to evidence that its builder scene compounds instead of restarting every September.

The square: five free nights in Centocelle

Festival Là Fuori's Centocelle programme is public science rather than professional development, and we have listed it as exactly that — wider listing tier, not the curated city page. It is still the most interesting free thing in Rome this week.

• The world's first cyborg — Neil Harbisson meets Rome in Centocelle — Saturday 12 September, 22:00, free, Fruit Park. Harbisson is the artist with an antenna implanted in his skull, widely described as the first legally recognised cyborg. A significant name, on a stage in a square, at ten at night, for nothing.
• Interview with ChatGPT — QUESTION THE MACHINE! — Sunday 13 September, 18:00, free. The audience sets the questions; the answers get read out and picked apart on stage. If you spend your days explaining AI to non-specialists, this is free training in doing it well.
• Three companion dialogues fill the rest: BODY TO BODY — what is a cyborg? on Friday at 19:30, DID YOU KNOW YOU ARE ALREADY A CYBORG? on Saturday at 19:30, and CYBORG SOCIETY on Sunday at 19:30. All free, all at the same square.

The institution: Monday at Sapienza

31st European Symposium on Research in Computer Security (ESORICS) 2026 — Sapienza University of Rome, from Monday 14 September, 08:30–17:00, €3,255.86.

Europe's flagship academic conference on computer security research, 31st edition, five days at Sapienza, peer-reviewed work on cryptography, privacy and systems security. The price is the highest we have ever listed in Rome and it is not a typo — that is an institutional academic registration. Your department pays it or you do not go. But a conference of this weight choosing Rome changes who considers moving here.

Free and open the same afternoon: the Digital Security Festival 8 — Infinito Umano: Rome Opening Ceremony, 14:00 at Il Chiostro del Convento di Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, on power, security and responsibility in the age of AI. Two security events, one Monday, three thousand euros apart.

The working week in between

The dependable room runs as ever — the Rome Tech Mixer & Social (Tech / AI / Data / IT) at Testardo Roma, Friday 18:30–21:30, €4.97, no agenda, mixed Italian and English. Earlier that day, IE University's free masterclass Think Global, Perform at Your Best runs 16:00–20:00 at the Parco dei Principi Grand Hotel & SPA. Who should go where

• Builders — ETHRome if you are in it. If not, Friday's mixer, then Sunday's ChatGPT interview for a genuinely different evening.
• Founders — Wednesday. Startup Night is the only room this week built around pitching, and €33.22 for a room with investors in it is rational. Thursday's GLOW meet-up if you want peers rather than a stage.
• Investors — Wednesday, and only Wednesday. Nothing else here is dealflow and we will not pretend otherwise.
• New to Rome — Friday's mixer at €4.97, then Saturday's aperitivo. Lowest cost, widest crowd, and both repeat.

Worth knowing

Thursday is a traffic jam. Five events on 17 September, four starting in the morning — and two of them are run by the same organiser in the same building at the same hour. The International Energy Future Conference (IEFC 2026) and the Global Physics Innovation Conference (GPIC 2026) both open at 09:00 at Hotel NH Roma Villa Carpegna, both paid, neither with a price published. Check which room you are walking into.

Zest Hub appears twice, under two names. Wednesday's Startup Night reads "The Hub - Zest" and Thursday's GLOW meet-up reads "Zest Hub" — same operation near Termini, our listings just carry each organiser's wording. Two events at one address in two days makes it Rome's default building this week.

One event has no venue at all. AI Agents for Business Professionals | Rome, Wednesday 19:00, €399, discloses the location to registrants only. The organiser's choice rather than an error, but at that price, know it first. And free still means registered everywhere except Centocelle, which is a public square you can walk into.
