Rome tech events this week: the festival is over and the weekend takes the load (25 Sep–1 Oct 2026)

Rome Future Week closed on Thursday night and took sixty-one listings with it. What is left is the Rome we will be writing about for the rest of the year: twenty tech events on our Rome page between 25 September and 1 October, seventeen of them free.

Twenty is the honest baseline, and still the widest week of the four cities we opened most recently. The shape is the story: sixteen of the twenty land before Monday — eight Friday, five Saturday, three Sunday — then the week thins out, and Wednesday 30 September has nothing at all. If you treat networking events in Rome as a weekday habit, invert it.

The Big One: Almaviva opens its headquarters

The one featured event on our Rome page this week is also the only one built purely around being in a room with other people. AlmavivA opens its Rome headquarters for tech talks and drinks. It is one of the largest Italian-owned IT groups, and much of Italy's transport technology runs on its work — which makes this a particular invitation: the integrator that builds for the state, opening its door to people who normally meet it through a tender.

It also stands alone — the only thing on our page between Monday afternoon and Thursday morning. Corporate headquarters mean a badge desk and a list: register in your own name and bring matching ID.

Friday: the institutions get in first

Eight events, and the good ones are daytime. Very Rome.

• PA intelligente — Talent Garden Roma Ostiense, 09:00, free. AgID gives five hours to digital identity, the IT wallet, public-sector cybersecurity and where AI actually gets used inside public administration. If you sell to the Italian state, its buyers are talking.
• Abitare il Futuro — Palazzo Orsini Taverna, Via di Monte Giordano 36, 10:00, free. How technology, AI and sustainability are changing cities, professions and the property market, argued out in a Renaissance palazzo. Rome in one line.
• Da Centeno ai Papi: alla scoperta dei tesori della Via Francigena — Jo&Joe Roma, Via delle Quattro Fontane 113, 15:30, paid. Startup Grind Rome turns outward: the Tuscia and Viterbo startup ecosystem and the Francigena corridor tying it to Rome.
• NEUROPLAY: guidare giochi e musica con la mente — Tor Vergata, Via del Politecnico 1, 17:00, free. Working brain-computer interfaces driving games and music, shown by the biomedical engineering group with Prof. Luigi Bianchi. You get into the lab itself.
• The Digital Euro at Work: the Future of Money — The Social Hub Rome, 17:00, free. Banca d'Italia takes the digital euro out of the technical committees: what the design decisions mean for banks, PSPs and fintechs. Also 17:00 — see below.

Free tech events in Rome this weekend

Eight events, all free, and not one is a generic mixer.

• Design Battle Roma — Talent Garden Roma Ostiense, Saturday 09:30, free. One brief, two hours, seventy designers. Newphoria runs it as live competition rather than workshop, which is rarer and better to watch.

• Stop Killer Robots: No Machine Can Decide to Kill — Latte Bookstore, Largo Dino Frisullo, Saturday from 08:00, free. Via Lattea moves the autonomous-weapons argument into a Testaccio bookshop inside the former slaughterhouse: meaningful human control, and where the debate stands now.
• Our hidden gem — Joomla: building communities not just websites — Libreria Minerva, Piazza Fiume 57, Saturday 17:00, free. The part of open source that is not code: governance, contributor pipelines, keeping volunteers going for two decades.
• L'INTELLIGENZA ARTIFICIALE IN EMERGENZA — Radio Soccorso Roma, Via Casilina 727/A, Saturday 18:30, free. Drones and AI in emergency management: monitoring, risk prevention, search and rescue. Volunteers who do it for real.
• MATTER LAB | Bits to atoms, code to cell — LOSPAZIO, Via Gabrino Fondulo 17, Sunday 17:00, free. Fab Lab & Co. on the two transformations of matter: biological, with digital biofabrication and regeneration, and digital.
• Fotografia e AI: chi racconta davvero la realtà? — Casa della Fotografia di Roma, Sunday 19:00, free. From Roger Fenton to Midjourney, photography has always lied: ethics, copyright, and what is left of the profession.

Then the week empties out

• RomHack Training 2026 — Polo Didattico Garbatella, from Monday 09:00, paid, four days to Thursday. Hands-on security training from the Cyber Saiyan non-profit; the 2025 edition drew 72 students from 21 countries. Deep work, not a meetup.
• Assemblea Consulta Roma Smart City Lab — Palazzo Senatorio, Piazza del Campidoglio 1, Monday 16:00, free. Roma Capitale convenes its Smart City Lab assembly on the Campidoglio: urban technology, data, connected infrastructure, city government in the room.
• IFIB 2026 – International Forum on Industrial Biotechnology and Bioeconomy — WeGil, Largo Ascianghi 5, Thursday 1 October, 09:00, paid, running into Friday. Sixteenth edition, with structured B2B matchmaking through the Enterprise Europe Network. The only room built for deals.

Venue corner: WeGil. The Trastevere hub bookends the week. IFIB takes it Thursday; on Friday its Sala Conferenze hosts INFORAV's Fare ecosistema: la materia prima dell'innovazione at 14:00, free.

Who should go where

• Builders — Friday 17:00, Tor Vergata, and let the digital euro go. Interfaces demonstrated by the people who built them do not turn up later on a podcast. Designers: Saturday morning at Talent Garden.
• Founders — one evening only? Tuesday at Almaviva. Selling into the public sector? Take Friday 09:00 at AgID instead and call it sales research; Monday on the Campidoglio is the same trade with the city.
• Investors — a quiet week and we will say so: no pitch night, no demo day, no investor evening all week. Thursday's IFIB matchmaking is the closest thing. Otherwise take the train: Milan has the network's two strongest sessions outside London.

Worth knowing

Three events cost money and none publishes a figure. Friday's Startup Grind afternoon, RomHack Training and IFIB are all listed paid with no price attached. For a four-day course and a two-day forum, get the number first.

Friday at 17:00 is a real clash. Tor Vergata sits out on Via del Politecnico in the far east; The Social Hub is by the Scalo San Lorenzo. Same minute, opposite ends of the city. Pick one.

Wednesday 30 September is empty. Not quiet — nothing at all. That is a gap in our coverage rather than in the city: university and public-sector rooms are the hardest to see from outside. Running something on the 30th? Send it over.

Free still means registered. All seventeen free rooms want your name in advance, and check the tier — elsewhere in the network this week we corrected a listing whose free tier was approval-only. Two rows want a look before you travel: Saturday's bookshop debate opens at 08:00, early enough to confirm, and Sunday's photography evening gives a venue but no street address.
