Rome tech events this week: two rooms open at 18:30 on Friday, and you can only have one (28 Aug – 3 Sep 2026)

Maiker Hub has picked Friday 28 August to switch Rome's AI scene back on. Rome Artificial Intelligence Meetup | Aperitivo & Networking lands at Pompa Malatesta from 18:30 to 20:30, EUR 15 — an aperitivo and a room, no slides and no pitches, for people who use artificial intelligence in their actual work rather than posting about it. It's the event we've featured in Rome this week and the highest-scoring thing on our board, and after a summer in which the city's tech events came down to a couple of reliable socials, it's the first one with a subject.

One caveat before you book: the evening runs in Italian. That's the right call for a Roman AI community and we'd rather say so than let you discover it at the door. If your Italian is conversational you'll be fine — this is a bar conversation, not a lecture — but if it isn't, Friday has another option, and it starts at precisely the same minute.

The Friday clash

Rome Tech Mixer & Social (Tech / AI / Data / IT) opens at 18:30 too — Testardo Roma, EUR 4.97 as listed, run by Rome Tech Social, and the most dependable fixture in the city. It gathers developers, data engineers, AI practitioners, IT professionals and the digital-nomad crowd for a drink and a conversation, and it has run every Friday straight through the summer without missing a week. Language is mixed, so either Italian or English works.

So Friday is a genuine choice rather than a double bill, and here's how we'd make it. Take the AI meetup if artificial intelligence is your job — the whole value of a subject-specific room is that you skip the "so what do you do" phase and get to the interesting part in five minutes. Take the mixer if you want breadth, if you're new in town, if you're job-hunting, or if EUR 15 is a real number this month. The mixer runs weekly; the AI evening does not, which tilts it if you're genuinely torn.

Wednesday: Campo de' Fiori, in English

Tech and Business Networking | Elevating Your Potential - Rome — The Drunken Ship, Wed 2 Sep, 18:00–20:00, EUR 13.27, Strive Networking.

An early-evening, cross-sector session in the middle of Campo de' Fiori, aimed at people building careers and companies in technology and the industries next door to it. It runs in English, which makes it the natural first stop for anyone who has just moved here, and the 18:00 start is unusually civilised by Roman standards — it's done by 20:00, so you can do this and still have dinner afterwards. Note the address, though: Campo de' Fiori on a Wednesday evening in early September is a busy, loud, tourist-heavy square. Arrive on time rather than fashionably late, before the room fills up with noise.

Who should go where

• Builders (developers, data, ML) — Friday's AI aperitivo if you can follow Italian, the mixer if you can't. Both rooms are technical; only one of them is on a subject.
• Founders — Wednesday. Strive's cross-sector room is the one where a conversation might plausibly turn into a customer, and it's in English, which widens the pool.
• Investors — an honest quiet week. Nothing here is built around dealflow. If you go anywhere, make it Wednesday and treat it as scouting rather than sourcing.
• New to Rome — Friday's mixer. Lowest price, widest crowd, no assumed background, and it happens again next week if this one doesn't land.

First-timer's note

Three rooms, three different languages of operation — that's genuinely useful to know in this city, so: the AI meetup is Italian, the mixer is mixed, Wednesday is English. Nobody will test you at the door in any of them.

All three are paid, which means a ticket bought in advance rather than cash at the bar; the prices are small, but the door isn't set up for improvisation. And on Roman timing: an 18:30 aperitivo means people actually arrive between 18:45 and 19:15, so turning up at 18:30 sharp will get you an empty room and a confused bartender. Fifteen minutes late is on time. Come with one line on what you're working on and one thing you're looking for, and you're prepared.

Worth knowing

One correction worth flagging. The Friday mixer spent the summer at Treefolk's Public House, but this week's listing puts it at Testardo Roma — check the event page before you set off, and don't navigate from memory or from last week's post. Series that move venue mid-run are how people end up standing outside the wrong pub.
