Edinburgh — Week of 19 Oct 2026

KU
John McIntyre Conference Centre, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh

with Adrian Mouat (Organiser, Chainguard) · Paula Kennedy (Organiser, Syntasso) · Chris Kranz (Organiser, Bank of England)

Kubernetes Community Days UK returns to Edinburgh for a second year: two days of cloud native talks, project demos and panels at the John McIntyre Conference Centre. KCD events are volunteer-run under the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, and this one's organising team spans Chainguard, Meta, the Bank of England, Nscale, Syntasso and Cloud Native Wales. The programme mixes practitioner deep-dives with open source maintainer sessions, so the people presenting are generally the people who wrote or operate the thing. Tickets are paid; the price band is set per ticket type on the CNCF event page. Why go: this is the only cloud native conference of its size in Scotland, and the maintainer track means you can ask the awkward question directly rather than filing an issue. Best for platform and SRE teams, Kubernetes operators, and engineers whose production environment is someone else's abstraction.

The Melting Pot, Edinburgh

OutGeekWomen's Edinburgh evening at The Melting Pot on Calton Road, with short talks and open networking for women working in technology. The group describes itself as built for women in tech and open to anyone who wants in, and runs the same format across several UK cities. The Edinburgh edition is free, starts at 18:00 and runs to about 20:30, with the talks kept short so most of the evening is conversation. The Melting Pot is a co-working space rather than a bar, which keeps the room usable for actually talking. Why go: Edinburgh's technical meetups skew heavily male and this is the city's most consistent counterweight — a room where the networking is the programme rather than an afterthought. Best for women working in engineering, data, product and design, and for anyone recruiting into those teams who wants to meet people outside their referral network.

Shepherd and Wedderburn LLP, Edinburgh EH3 8FY

with Borislav Borisov (Co-founder & CEO, TableSense) · Craig Parker (Co-founder & CEO, WorkPhotos) · David Carboni (Co-founder & CTO (host), HairTracker)

October's Founders Meetup Edinburgh, hosted in Shepherd and Wedderburn's offices, is a panel on "Bootstrapping to Break-Even". David Carboni hosts two founders who reached profitability without outside funding: Borislav Borisov, co-founder and CEO of TableSense, a B2B hospitality tech company, and Craig Parker, co-founder and CEO of WorkPhotos, a job-photo app for trades and field teams, previously Director of Operations at Skyscanner. Structured networking follows the panel. Tickets are £5, doors from 18:00. Why go: almost every founder panel is about raising, and the operational detail of getting to break-even on revenue alone — pricing, cash timing, when to hire — is both rarer and more useful to most people in the room. Best for bootstrapped and early-revenue founders, and for anyone weighing whether to raise at all.

Perk, Nova House

EdinburghJS meets at Perk in Fountainbridge for its October session, with two talks: building sites that clients can edit themselves, and the internal tooling teams end up writing whether or not they planned to. It is Edinburgh's main JavaScript community meetup, free and open to anyone who writes for the web, with doors from 18:30. The group runs monthly through the year and keeps the format simple — two talks, questions, then the room stays to talk. Perk is a working café space, so the atmosphere is closer to a conversation than a conference. Why go: both topics are the unglamorous work that eats real engineering time, and this is the Edinburgh room where front-end and full-stack developers compare notes on it without a vendor in the mix. Best for web developers, agency teams and anyone maintaining a CMS someone else has to use.

Pollock Halls, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh

ROSCon UK, the Robot Operating System developer conference, runs its Edinburgh edition at Pollock Halls, hosted by the Tartan Robotics Collective with the Open Source Robotics Foundation. The structure is three days: day 0 is tours, robot demos and socials; day 1 is workshops and deep dives; day 2 is the main conference of keynotes and talks, with a gala dinner at the Playfair Library in between. Professional and student tickets are priced separately. ROS is the de facto standard framework for robotics software, so the talks are generally from people shipping it rather than surveying it. Why go: this is the UK's main gathering of working robotics software engineers and it is in Edinburgh — the deepest technical robotics room Scotland gets all year. Best for robotics and autonomy engineers, researchers moving toward product, and hardware founders whose stack sits on ROS.

Meadowbank House, 153 London Road

Geovation Scotland's October community lunch at Meadowbank House, for the geospatial and location-technology community. It is a free lunchtime session from 13:00 — the Packed Lunch series is informal, with the community rather than a speaker list as the draw. One practical note worth reading before you book: Meadowbank House is a Scottish Government building and attendees are signed in as visitors, so bring photographic ID (passport, driving licence or government-issued ID) for security on the day. Anyone who already holds building access does not need to be booked in. Why go: Scotland's geospatial sector is small, well-connected and unusually open, and Geovation is the hub the whole of it passes through — one lunch gets you most of the network. Best for anyone working with location data, mapping, Earth observation or planning tech, and founders looking for Ordnance Survey-adjacent routes to market.

Edinburgh Law School hosts a session on how states are intervening in the semiconductor industry - subsidies, export controls and national champions - and what that means for the companies caught in between. The discussion sits at the point where industrial policy meets supply chains: who gets protected, what compliance actually lands on firms, and how export restrictions ripple down to people buying or designing silicon. It is free, runs 14:00 to 16:00, and is explicitly relevant beyond lawyers - anyone working near hardware, supply chains or deeptech policy will recognise the questions. The organisers moved this online only on 15 October. There is no longer a room in Edinburgh: the Microsoft Teams joining link and a background paper go out to registrants by email, so register on Eventbrite rather than travelling to Old College. Why go: chip policy has stopped being an abstraction for anyone shipping hardware or training large models, and an academic law panel gives you the mechanics rather than the headlines. Best for hardware and deeptech founders, procurement and supply-chain staff, and investors with semiconductor or AI-infrastructure exposure.

Pollock Halls, The University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh

A 90-minute evening opening of the ROSConUK exhibition hall at Pollock Halls to the wider community, with no conference ticket required. Sponsors show working robots on the stands, and ROSConUK delegates are in the room and willing to talk — which is the real draw, since the conference itself is paid and mostly sold to professionals. The organisers state that all experience levels are welcome, from robotics professionals and academics to hobbyists, and that under-18s must be accompanied. Free, from 17:00. Why go: it is the only free way into the UK's main robotics conference, and standing in front of a working robot with the person who built it beats any talk. Best for students, hobbyists and engineers curious about robotics, and for anyone in Edinburgh who wants to see what the field looks like up close before committing to it.

Edinburgh Futures Institute, Edinburgh

The weekly Venture Café Edinburgh Thursday Gathering at the Edinburgh Futures Institute on Lauriston Place — the twenty-ninth edition. Free, no application, open to anyone in or near the innovation community. Doors from 17:00, with parallel sessions and an open networking floor running to around 20:00, and you can leave whenever it stops being useful. The Venture Café network runs the same Thursday format in cities across Europe; in Edinburgh it has become the one weekly fixture the whole ecosystem passes through, which is why founders, students, investors and support organisations all turn up without needing a reason. Why go: consistency is the value here — it is on every Thursday, so it is the easiest thing in the city to introduce someone to, and the easiest place to be found. Best for founders wanting conversations over talks, and anyone new to Edinburgh tech looking for a single front door.

CreateFuture, 10 Waterloo Place

with Bethany McKenzie (Recruiter, Harvey Nash) · Lauren Simpson (Recruiter, Stoffel) · Leanne Weir (Talent, CreateFuture) + 1 more

ProductTank Edinburgh puts four local tech recruiters on a panel to talk about what has actually changed in hiring product people, hosted at CreateFuture's Waterloo Place office. The panel is Bethany McKenzie (Harvey Nash), Lauren Simpson (Stoffel), Leanne Weir (CreateFuture) and Stuart Ritchie (Experis Scotland). The stated questions include how the local and regional product job market is shifting and how AI is changing the way recruiters find and screen candidates, followed by an industry state-of-the-union segment. Free, 17:30 to 20:00, with time to talk afterwards. Why go: most AI-and-hiring panels are run by vendors selling screening tools. This one is the people doing the screening, in one city, answering questions on the record. Best for product managers between roles or planning a move, and for hiring managers trying to work out why their pipeline looks different this year.

Cundall, Edinburgh

The Forum for Women in Data Centres launches its Scottish chapter with an evening of drinks at Cundall's George Street office — the first time the group has run an event north of the border. FWD brings together people working across data centres and critical infrastructure: operators, engineers, designers, consultants and the supply chain. The format is deliberately informal — three hours from 17:30, free, sponsored by Cundall, Gerco and MOY, with drinks included. The group champions women in the industry and states that everyone is welcome; the stated purpose of this first session is to meet people and help shape what the Scottish community does next. Why go: Scotland's data-centre pipeline is growing fast and there is currently no standing room where the people building and running it meet socially. A launch night is the cheapest moment to get into a network while it is still small. Best for anyone in data-centre design, build, operations or power and cooling.

COSLA Conference Centre, Edinburgh EH12 5BH

Data Day Edinburgh 2026 brings Scotland's public-sector and civic data community together at the COSLA Conference Centre for a full day on what is actually being built with data here. The emphasis is on delivered work rather than strategy — services, pipelines and analysis running inside councils, health boards, government bodies and the organisations that work with them. Free to attend, from 08:30, at COSLA on Haymarket Terrace. The audience is a mix of analysts, data engineers, service designers and policy staff, which shapes the questions asked after each session. Why go: civic data work rarely gets written up, so a day of people describing what they shipped inside a public body is unusually hard to get anywhere else. Best for anyone working with or selling into Scottish public services, and for data practitioners who want to see what the constraints really look like.

LEVELS cafe and lounge, Edinburgh

Edindies, Edinburgh's indie game development community, holds its weekly Saturday afternoon session at LEVELS cafe and lounge on Holyrood Road. No programme, no speakers, no ticket. People arrive from 13:00 with whatever they are working on — a prototype, a build that needs fresh eyes, art or audio — and work alongside each other, with playtesting happening informally across the tables. Dropping in for an hour is as normal as staying for the afternoon. Why go: Edinburgh and Dundee together hold one of the UK's densest games clusters, but almost all of the indie layer is solo or two-person studios, which makes a standing weekly room genuinely useful rather than merely sociable. Best for indie game developers at any stage, and for artists, writers and composers trying to find a team.
