October Start-up Café

TU Dublin's monthly coffee morning for aspiring founders at the Greenway Hub on the Grangegorman campus, 10:00 to 12:00 on the last Thursday of the month. Each edition has a guest founder who talks through their own route from idea to launch and then runs a short workshop on refining your concept and your pitch. An open-mic slot lets anyone pitch and take feedback in a low-pressure room. October's guest is Sean Kirwan, CEO and co-founder of MedWrite.ai, who spent twenty years in digital roles in pharma before founding it. Free. The October edition is full and running a waiting list, so watch for cancellations. You do not need an idea prepared; the organiser asks you to bring a problem or challenge you would like to work on, and the session is built around creative problem-solving. Pitch slots are allocated in advance. There is no parking on site.

Dublin | Claude Code Impact Lab

A four-hour build night that follows a September talk where people who use Claude Code all day sat with people uneasy about AI and worked through three questions: what AI means for their jobs, what it is doing to their families and communities, and who sets the rules. The problems named that evening become the briefs, posted on the event page ahead of the day. Teams of up to five pick a brief and build against it with Claude Code until demos start around 20:00. Judging is on whether the build works live and whether someone could pick it up afterwards. Pizza mid-build. Every participant gets 100 dollars in Claude API credits; each member of the winning team gets a month of Claude Max 20x. Hosted by Kevin Collins of DCU:Innovate Catalyst. Free, approval required, exact address sent to approved registrants.

Functional Code on a Graph - Calculating Reinsurance Recoveries

Dublin Data Science's monthly talk, this time on using directed acyclic graphs to model a chain of reinsurance treaties and calculate recoveries. Mick Cooney, one of the group's organisers, shows how tidyverse code, domain knowledge and functional techniques break a messy calculation into small pieces, with a full audit trail for the odd results these calculations throw up. Thursday 29 October, 18:30 to 20:30, Trinity Business School, Pearse Street (BoI Room 225). Free, RSVP on Meetup.

Seminar by Dr Aleksi Aaltonen (Stevens Institute of Technology)

Dr Aleksi Aaltonen of the Stevens Institute of Technology on 'Making Sense of Data in the Age of AI: Data Studies in Management'. His argument: data have always been central to large-scale organising and are becoming more so in an AI-driven economy, but what actually feeds contemporary AI systems resists the simple definitions companies work with, which is why managing, using and sharing data for AI proves so hard in practice. He makes the case for treating data as a research object in its own right, drawing on his own work and the Research Handbook on Digital Data. Part of UCD College of Business's MIS seminar series and its Conversations on AI and Humans collection. 2pm to 3.30pm in Room Q115, Lochlann Quinn School of Business, Belfield. Free.
